It should be taken down from all state maintained grounds (although I admit I still feel it might be appropriate to fly that flag at places like Gettysburg during reenactments). It should be removed from any state flag. The Confederate flag flying across the street from the capitol in Charleston was the flag my ancestor fought under while enlisted in the NC 26th and only about 5% of the troops in that regiment survived the war. It was the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. I've already posted what that flag means to me elsewhere. But if I wave that flag today, I will be hurting a great number of people who, for entirely understandable reasons, will not comprehend to what I would be paying respect. Then, too, that misunderstanding would lead some to believe I hold views that I actually find completely repugnant. In truth, it was for this latter reason that I never personally displayed a Confederate flag.
So Scott, I'll never be with you on the marriage issue, but on the battle flag we agree. ;0)
