New You found a "disturber"
which is what we called them in DSL Classes. Something that distrubs the DSL service. Some of those equipment like bridge taps got put in so long ago that the local Bell companies don't have a record of them. Those line coils for the hearing impared also disturb the DSL signal.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New All new wire here.
This area was completely rewired less than 3 years ago. Problem was, when the wiring was switched over to the new, the guy who did it was a voice guy, and he just tapped into the pair rather than cut and splice.

New PacHell does some weird things
They ADDED a bridge tap to my DSL line about a year after it was installed. That completely screwed up my DSL -- I didn't get anything until it was fixed -- which required a couple calls to my ISP, two PacBell trips (they didn't fix it the first time), and a Covad trip (since somehow one of the wires at the wiring box became disconnected).

So, yes, bridge tap == very bad for DSL
