New Holy crap!

Gehrt estimates that around 2,000 coyotes call downtown Chicago home, but it's likely more than that. He says they are thriving in what was considered a less-than-ideal living situation.

"Once they got there, they experienced higher reproduction, more food, and so now they have no reason to leave," he said. "People think animals living in that habitat are less fit or sick, and the opposite is actually true."

He's including the near north side to add in the land along the Chicago river, but still ... !

Satan (impatiently) to Newcomer: The trouble with you Chicago people is, that you think you are the best people down here; whereas you are merely the most numerous.

New What were those stats on the %edible-food regularly tossed by Muricans?
New We got them too
There is a pack that live near the beach (lake erie)and mostly live off the dead fish that wash up. There have been instances of disappeared small pets that have been attributed to the coyotes, but there has been no evidence. Our miniature schnauzer was attacked by something, probably an owl or hawk, but the other girls (yellow lab and a rotlab) prevented anything more than the original stunning peck on the head. Coyotes are survivors, they're here to stay.

New Not quite in the same league...
But rabbits are gradually infiltrating the suburbs of Canberra. The suburban gardens and community playing fields are just so much better maintained than the wilderness of the countryside and so the bunnies (technically a pest in Australia) are thriving.

New May be Eastern coyotes moving back West
Part of the Eastern coyote population are wolf hybrids. They are larger and stronger plus they have better social skills and thrive near people.

There is a nomadic pack in our neighborhood. In the winter, they camp in the woods behind our house for a couple of days every three months or so. We can hear them "talk" all night.
New We've got some skinny ones around here.
There's been an amazing explosion of wildlife around the DC area over the last 10 years or so. Bald Eagles are common (I usually see one over I-295 at the south corner of DC in the mornings). We've had a colony of ground hogs at work for about 5 years, and a pack of foxes in the last couple or so.

I've only seen a coyote once in our neighborhood, but there's been an explosion of foxes in the last 5-10 years or so. They don't seem to be doing much to the squirrel population, so maybe they're working on mice and rabbits or something...

Unfortunately, too many of the foxes seem to be fearless around cars - they're often carcasses on the roads. :-(

There are the occasional black bear sightings, too...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Black bear?
We gots those

We have not made that mistake with the birdfood again...
New Whoops.
