windows sux
my machine on tuesday's informs me that it needs to restart to accommodate a fix that it needed, downloaded and staged for installation. It is horrible that I require a windows firewall to be a backstop from my cable modem firewall. even worse it has a built in antivirus that receives updates silently so I don't really know what it is doing. It's an absolute horror that the new laptop with windows 8 with slightly better hardware and the same ram as a macbook air cost the huge sum of $199.00
Worse still I had to purchase for $39.99 a pristine copy of windows8 to install so all of the crap that HP puts on their machines can disappear. So much harder than getting a Mac and installing via cdrom.
Horrible it is horrible. Last one ran for 3 years without a bsod and the daily waiting for that event ruined many a day.

My dad recently got a Win7 machine after running XP for years...
I have started having problems with malware. It shows up on various sites, e.g., [Local University's] payroll dept, etc. I have run something to remove it, but then a week later something else shows up. I never had this problem with XP. I'm going to visit in a few weeks. I sorta dread it... :-/ Cheers, Scott. (Who knows the problem would be worse with XP, but devil you know...)

Yup. Just a few months ago. They didn't want 8.x.
Dell still sells machines with Win7 if you look around a little. Thanks for the good thoughts. :-) Cheers, Scott.

Wow
That would be me going into the car dealer to ask if they have any new never driven 2011 trucks on the lot for the same price as a 2014. Then complaining because the seals are dry and leaking fluid.
Yeah, I know.

Win7 is on "extended support" until January 2020. It'll be around a while.

+5, subtle. Yes, I catch your meaning..
As [a Famous one] said, There is nothing in this world that can not be made a little cheaper; those who buy by price alone are that one'e prey.
You too are an outlier.. you gots the life-rafts--a perk for the salt-mine labor via which you built the rafts. As to days wasted waiting for the horribleness: for many (the less they knew about the guts) those days Did come. As for me, a horror would be to stay current on The mixed-digital-Registry and the latest gossip on what to Beware in some recent Bug-fix er, Upgrade.
Life way-too short to have to perpetually be ready to clean-up behind a fix-on-fix-on-fix kluge that never did manage to "add-in" security to that CP/M (semi-stolen) clone. Lobster is good; albatross is stringy and brings Bad Luck. YMDV

apple controls what hardware goes into its boxen
limits it, drives it and charges a premium because all the drivers mostly work. Microsoft has the same thing, its called a xbox and is considerably more expensive than a laptop. I have access to knowledge to hack registries. My earlier point was that I have been pigignorant of having to do anything with my lapper. Of course I dont download, click, get phished (well mostly) anything I am not sure of. The box works, doesnt require any config stuff or things of that nature. I use it too keep my books with gnucash. research the intarwebs download very specific software to test for tools in aid of system administration. read garbage blogs and news sites. email and here. So I dont really do intensive stuff, but have not had to figure out why it is not running at all. It just works, like Mac just works but without the sticker shock.

It's not UNIX
Useless to me as a development machine regardless of what they might have managed to fix.

yup, shoddy dev platform unless you are from other countries
developing java code to be run on UNIX systems and expect that the code will be FUCKING flawless
