New Suggestions??
Last night everything seemed normal. This morning I can't access the internet. My wife can. As of about noon, she can't get on either. Both win7 boxes. I can ping but there is no app level as far as I can see. I am posting on the machine that can't see the internet throung a virtual linux connection on iceweaseal. I have AVG antivirus and the Indian I "chatted with" was as useless as tits on a boiled egg.
Anybody got any real suggestions?

New Expired antivirus stuff? Firewall? Other devices (tablets)?
The comments in this thread mention things like that.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/40403-63-suddenly-connect-internet

See christian06 and leftbrainfemale's comments near the end.

It used to be I had all kinds of trouble with networking Winders until I put everything on static IPs. I haven't worried about that too much with 7, but most of our stuff is still on static IPs.

Another thing to try is a different DNS. Google's are usually pretty reliable, if not the absolute fastest.

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

I'm assuming you're not using IPv6. If IPv6 isn't configured properly, some sites will disappear as far as your browser is concerned.

HTH a little. Good luck. Let us know what fixes it.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Ugh
If you mean a Linux VM on one of the affected PCs can access the internet, that pretty much places the problem inside your house.

What did you try to verify application level communication?

It is Windows, so reboot before trying anything else.

Did you ping IP addresses or names? If IP addresses, use nslookup to check DNS lookups.
New Re: Ugh
I agree that it is in the house. I can ping yahoo.com or cisco.com from windows cmd window and the name resolves. The application layer stuff, firefox, chrome, can not resolve addresses.
I've rebooted more times than required to install an editor (that's a lot).
Thanks,
Hugh

New A firewall or something similar is "protecting" you?
7 has a firewall built in. It also blocks things depending on whether it thinks you are on a Public network or not.

Unfortunately, there are so many variations on this theme that it's hard to tell what you can do to fix it.

Check:
Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center. If it says "Public" then you'll likely have no internet access.

Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer and browse through the various Windows Logs and similar things in the left panel. Maybe it'll give you an indication of the errors and what is causing it.

Can you browse sites using the IP addresses in the browser address bar? I assume not, but that might be another thing worth checking.

E.g. http://74.125.228.20 is www.google.com (here, anyway)

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Try a clean Firefox profile?
AFAIK, Firefox uses the underlying OS resolver, so it should work if nslookup works. Chrome has a built-in resolver, so all bets are off there.

Start a clean Firefox profile and see if you can get anywhere with it. (Run firefox.exe -p to bring up the profile manager.)

Unless you have file sharing totally disabled, see what happens when you run "net show \\other_computername" from each PC. (Substitute the name of the target PC for other_computername.) I'd expect to see at least an empty list, or an $IPC share, not an error.
New Re: Try a clean Firefox profile?
It's not just firefox. Outlook is down. Chrome is down. The VM I'm using is the only way I can reach the outside world.

There are numerous... Windows thingers that do that.

New ipconfig /all
Paste the output plzkthx.

Also "route print".

ETA: Go into Internet Explorer, and check your proxy settings:

Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN Settings

Untick everything that's ticked (if anything is ticked - maybe make a note of the settings beforehand) and see if that makes a difference.

New No.
New The only thing I see that's different from mine...
You've got an IPv6 address listed (along with an IPv4 address) as your Default Gateway. I'm not sure why that's the case (IPv6 is enabled for me, but everything is set to Automatic - I have no specific numbers entered in any of the IPv6 GUI fields. AFAIK, only IPv4 addresses are used for all I do.).

You mentioned you're running AVG. Apparently there can be some weird interactions between AVG and Win7 - http://forums.avg.com/us-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=234149 I don't know if that will point to a solution for your case, but it might turn on a light-bulb.

Are you able to connect if you disable AVG? Maybe you need to uninstall it and reinstall it, or try another vendor. (I use Symantec, but I get it free from work.)

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New You have two connections to the same network
Both your wireless and wired NICs are active on the 192.168.1.0/24 network. If 7's network stack is anything like XP's, that situation confuses it to no end.

XP will sometimes send parts of a connection down both NICs. The server then responds by dropping the connection. Single packet transactions like ping or simple DNS lookups go through because Windows doesn't get a chance to send a reply down the wrong pipe.

See what happens if you disable one of the NICs.
New This.
New Fixed!!
This is posted from the winders version.
I got a program from Tweaking.com called Windows Repair (All in One) that mostly used MS system tools and put everything back in place. Very cool. E-mail works again. As does chrome. It's time consuming, but I got some time to spend with the problem dog, so that worked out well.
Thanks all! Much appreciated!

New May have spoken too soon.
My VM no longer works. E_NOINTERFACE error? I could try to reinstall VM, but maybe it doesn't play well with Win7. I use it mostly for development work, which is not in demand since I'm doing embedded C stuff now with a different compiler, and Sudoko. I'd miss the Sudoko, but it's not essential.
Has anybody had a problem with Oracle VM?

New I use VirtualBox
Instead of VMWare... though i have VMWare available to me.

It seems to work very well with Linux... not so sure about Windows on Windows though.

New Me too.
We used VM ware at Cisco but that was then and I no longer have access. I use VM as virtual machine rather than the product. I'm thinking of just reinstalling VBox with a new Debian image. I'll make the base image about 40Gb instead of the 4 that they recommend. I think it's 4. Been a while. Anyway, things are better than they were.

New E_NOINTERFACE you may have reconfigured
your settings with your fix. In the vm, remove the interface. Then in the vm control panel remove the interface, then re-install it. Go back into the vm and install the interface.
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 59 years. meep
New I removed everything I could find.
That had to do with Oracle VM. I can't reinstall it. The windows msi engine will not remove files that have been changed. There is probably something lurking somewhere that causes the msi engine to shit itself, but it won't clean it up when uninstalling.
The only reason that I'm worried is that the VM let me talk to the net when winders was buggered.

New Take a look at Revo Uninstaller.
You have to be careful with tools like this, but they are good at removing stuff that Winders won't.

There's a freeware version that may do the job for you:
