No.
You are being a troll. Taking money from anyone like that is a problem. Period. You like it because of your precious "heritage." Fuck your heritage, it honestly means "fuck all." I should not have replied to you
you are a complete waste of energy attacking me because I see casinos as a legal entity for reservations to make money. No matter that you probably don't mind lottery vendors, bars, strip clubs, banks or the stock market. It just gripes your ass that Indians make money off of white people. I don't associate casinos with reservations
I've been to dozens of casinos, never been on a reservation. -- Drew |
|
That's because you don't live around here.
Billboards advertising Indian casinos are plentiful here in Los Angeles. |
|
Used to see them every 10 minutes on Red Sox broadcasts...

You mean ...
Bill's pet issue isn't a universal truth? -- Drew |

And in NC, it's Cherokee. And box is right on this.
I don't like the hoops the different nations have to jump through in order to be "approved" for operating casinos. IMO, if you're a Native, even if you're the only member of your Nation left alive, you ought to be allowed to open a casino. But Bill's absolutely dead bang correct on this. Most of the opposition to these casinos originates with an intense displeasure that brown people are "getting rich" from the poor white suckers. Personally, any white fleecing that might be going on (not that I know of any) is wholly justified and long overdue. We can't be fleeced enough to ever come close to balancing the scales. Years ago when Newt was on a anti-immigrant campaign I told my father I agreed completely with Newt, but I didn't think his position was strong enough. You may recall Newt wanted to un-citizen anyone born here if their parents had entered the US illegally. His position was that even if your parents were born here, but your grandparents had entered the US illegally, you were still not a citizen. When I told my father I didn't think Newt's position was strong enough, he gasped and said, "What on earth? What do you think should be the policy?" I said, "There should be no citizenship granted for anyone born here whose ancestry includes any illegal immigrants. And that should hold all the way back to at least 1492. Anyone born here whose ancestors weren't already here in 1492 are not to be considered citizens, but illegals and they should be sent back to wherever they originated. All of them. No exceptions." Dad felt better after my elaboration. ;0) |

So, retribution makes it alright. Perfect.
You also realize that the bulk of people going to Casinos can't really afford to spend that money there. Awesome. My opposition, regardless of what dumb shit thinks, is not due to them being brown people. My opposition is indeed, the same opposition as Bars, Banks, Stock Exchange and the Lottery. The thing is, Banking is really the only current way to "do" the money thing... it needs to be fixed and we know how and why. -- greg@gregfolkert.net "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." --Stanislaw Jerzy Lec |
|
So you're in charge of how people should spend their money?
And note that I said IF there was any fleecing going on then it was justified. |
|
Nope, never said that.
Taking advantage of weak minded people that won't think for themselves is where this is where it stinks. Then there are those that think in ways upon which they do prey upon people's weak mind... and there we have X in a nutshell. -- greg@gregfolkert.net "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." --Stanislaw Jerzy Lec |

What's wrong with fleecing Teabaggers?
The weak-minded are allowed to vote. They shouldn't be protected. |
|
The casino issue was the weakest on on that list, IMO, but ...
The issue isn't whether the weak minded should be protected. It's about casinos vs. other possible businesses. Which one generates more overall economic activity? -- Drew |
|
On the res? That's easy.

Hmm ... this is awkward
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/destinations/travel/story/2012-02-09/Casino-gambling-revenue-shows-uptick-nationally/53029676/1 [American Gaming] Association figures don't include tribal casinos, which comprise about 40%, or $26 billion, of total U.S. casino revenue annually, estimates Eadington. http://navajotimes.com/news/2012/0112/012612census.php This means Natives are now a slightly larger minority, comprising 1.7 percent of the population versus 1.5 in 2000. Casino gambling is not primarily an Indian issue. However, the impact on the community is disproportionate to say the least. It's like drug laws. Even though minorities consume less drugs in absolute numbers, the impact of legal action has fallen so disproportionately on minorities it's hard not to see intent. Like I said, the gambling was the weakest issue on that list for me, but to the extent that I agreed with it I didn't see any racism in it. But it's not hard to believe that some of the powerful interests aligned against it are disguising the real reason for their opposition. -- Drew |

when the only legal casinos were in vegas and AC
could you gamble in cleveland? Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 59 years. meep |

No, and that's why I didn't see this issue as having to do with Indians
There was opposition to allowing a casino here. It wasn't going to be on a res, so the arguments couldn't have had anything to do with Indians. But ... If there are people with deep pockets who don't like Indians, and they're attacking casinos because of that, it would make sense that the organizations they fund would "exceed their mandate" so to speak and go after all casinos. -- Drew |

Not clear
In any time and place where you couldn't legally gamble, you could of course do so illegally. What does that have to do with whether casino gambling should be legalized, or whether opposition to casino gambling is an indirect attack on Indians? -- Drew |

if you go back to the top of the thread
I questioned why casino gambling needed to be curtailed. Later I then pointed out that is the one way that tribes could leverage income. My last point to you was that gambling will happen casinos or no. So once again, back to the top, why should the government force casinos to close?
