New What Pakistan Knew about Bin Laden.
In trying to prove that the ISI knew of Bin Laden’s whereabouts and protected him, I struggled for more than two years to piece together something other than circumstantial evidence and suppositions from sources with no direct knowledge. Only one man, a former ISI chief and retired general, Ziauddin Butt, told me that he thought Musharraf had arranged to hide Bin Laden in Abbottabad. But he had no proof and, under pressure, claimed in the Pakistani press that he’d been misunderstood. Finally, on a winter evening in 2012, I got the confirmation I was looking for. According to one inside source, the ISI actually ran a special desk assigned to handle Bin Laden. It was operated independently, led by an officer who made his own decisions and did not report to a superior. He handled only one person: Bin Laden. I was sitting at an outdoor cafe when I learned this, and I remember gasping, though quietly so as not to draw attention. (Two former senior American officials later told me that the information was consistent with their own conclusions.) This was what Afghans knew, and Taliban fighters had told me, but finally someone on the inside was admitting it. The desk was wholly deniable by virtually everyone at the ISI — such is how supersecret intelligence units operate — but the top military bosses knew about it, I was told.

Rather long, but a very good read.
New GMTA. :-)
New Crap. Sorry. Missed yours.
New No worries, comrade. :-)
New Which brings the inevitable conclusion . . .
. . that the U.S. knew full well Pakistan was managing Bin Laden, and that if they mentioned anything about the raid to Pakistan, Bin Laden wouldn't be there.

Bin Laden, confident that Pakistan was managing his account, and would let him know if anything was going down, and get him out of there, was caught off his guard.

So, maybe the CIA isn't quite as dumb as they look?

And, Pakistan got so pissed because they thought they had Bin Laden reserved for their own purposes, and they got outsmarted by stupid Americans.

New Oh, I've never thought they were stupid..
But just ordinary bizness-Class Muricans--so you could rarely trust them to do the Right thing, all else being -mainly- CYA and get-on to a plush Retirement.
(Field operatives, of course possessed (or were possessed-of) various degrees of patriotic-dedication and surely some well-crafted lore--except, too often that didn't include speaking another language like a native. IIRC, in past years they fired any gays uncovered, many of whom were said to have just that talent, but ... you know..)

They have been know to call selves The Corporation/Company, after all.

New Cookie Factory.
At least that's what I heard them called back in 1969 when they were courting my father to take a position.
New It's a good article, but...
It presents Karzai in a light that is almost flattering. That's going a bit far for my taste.

Also, I have to think that higher-ups at the NSC and the White House know all this stuff and have no illusions about what Pakistan's been up to. It's just they have little choice but to deal with them as best they can.

(IIRC, W threatened Pakistan with war if they didn't kinda-sorta join up with us after 9/11. One doesn't do that to people one thinks are "good guys".)

Pakistan is unstable, has been run by the military for ages, and has nuclear weapons. Nobody knows what chaos would follow a violent overthrow of the government. It also had 150M+ people in 2000. Going to war with them is a big and dangerous undertaking.

Even with all of that I'll probably put her book on the list.

Cheers,
Scott.

"No question," Trudeau said confidently, "it was definitely out my butt."
