New Re: It's funny.
Apple doesn't seem to have any problems making bigger or smaller iOS screens when they want.

It's not the size of the screen that matters. iOS screens come in just two shapes: the iPad and its 4:3 ratio, and whateverthefuck the iPhone has.

That's it. Android screens come in every aspect ratio you can think of.

Apple doesn't understand graphics any better than anyone else; their screensaver might not have flickered, but the Mac is a poor relation to Winders(TM) for graphics performance that actually matters, to wit: 3D. Doesn't matter whether it's an NVidia card or an AMD, on the same hardware, the Windows driver will extract more performance than the Mac OS driver. Saw it myself when I bootcamped my iMacs.

As for nav in the car - I think a tablet is too big for something that the driver will use (although for a passenger navigating for you, they're ideal) and you're probably better off using the satnav and offline maps that comes with your phone (Lumia owners are smug at this point; worldwide offline mapping, free!). It's a better size for mounting on the dash. A tablet would be very distracting.
New Yeahbut, it's not quite that simple.
I did mention aspect ratio, but not in that sentence. :-)

http://www.iosres.com/ lists the nitty-gritty on iOS. There have been 3 aspect ratios so far. Presumably there will be at least one more when the rumored bigger iPhone 6 is released. It seems reasonable to me that they would want another column of icons on the 6 (5 cols) compared to the 5S (4 cols). But they may remember Steve's arguing about keeping it narrow enough to use with 1 hand. Presumably they'd want a "Retina" version as well. I'm too frazzled from shoveling to do the math right now...

Fortunately, someone already has - http://9to5mac.com/2...-screen-iphone-6/ And apparently Apple's been pushing an "Auto Layout" tool on iOS developers so that they can handle different resolutions and aspect ratios automatically.

You're probably right about the tablet-in-the-car distraction. But being across the pond with a good-enough tablet that can do e-mail and web stuff and also be a Google Maps box in the car would be appealing. One less gadget and charger to carry around.

Interesting times.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Some RV folks use mini iPads for GPS.
So that's one less device if you ditch the Garmin.

New Lumia 1520!
Brilliant satnav, is massive, is phone, comes in bright colours so you old people can find it again when you put it down.
New Hey, if it vibrates well, there may be another use! :)
