...they'll open MS Word docs just fine. Even on console or over remote ssh sessions in mutt ;-)

I actually use them to create an automated phone number lookup tool here by scanning a copy of the corporate contact list stored as an MS Word document.

For GUI type stuff, AbiWord or KWord will work, though OO is the champ at near 100% compatibility.
