Hi,
I've got a Toshiba Portege R835-P88 with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB M4 SSD. It's a nice machine, but with lots (~50+) of Chrome tabs it gets a little RAM constrained.
I'm considering upgrading it to 16 GB of RAM. Crucial and Toshiba both say the max is 8 GB. Intel says the i5-2450M can handle 16 GB "(dependent on memory type)", and the HM65 Express chipset doesn't seem to have a listed RAM limit (at least I can't find it anywhere). I can't find anything that defines "(dependent on memory type)" - I assume it's a speed issue (I know some motherboards have limits on higher-than-average speed RAM sticks).
I've seen a thread where someone has a T420 with an i5-2450M with 16GB of RAM and no issues (even though Crucial and Lenovo both say the limit is 8 GB).
I assume that the 8GB limit is simply the "supported" limit and that nobody at Lenovo or Toshiba bothered to test them with 16GB. But perhaps there's something in the BIOS that limits it. :-/
Anyone have any thoughts before I just take the $150 plunge to try the Portege with 16GB?
Thanks.
Cheers,
Scott.
