New What about rules? And wildcards?
I've got a bunch of rules filtering things to folders, plus a bunch of spam ones - which I assume Gmail will probably handle as well or better. I also use wildcards, so *@domain.com is delivered to a catch-all address. Will that still work?

Drew
New Think I'll try that with one of my domains
Using labels instead of folders would take some getting used to.

New Using labels instead of folders
In IMAP they show up as Folders.

Only the Web Interface shows Labels.

Works exactly the same as Folders.

New Yeah, but better
A message can have multiple labels, to "appear" in different folders at the same time.

New Re: What about rules? And wildcards?
Yes, both work. Gmail has filters. There's no way that I'm aware of to import from Evolution (or any other client (but I haven't really looked very hard...))

Assuming you own the domain name and have it switched over to the Goog for mail, you can have up to n (last time I looked, n = 10) named email addresses, each with their own account/password/etc...And you can also have a catch-all that delivers everything-else@domain.com to the catch-all. I make heavy use of that since switching from running m'own Exim to Gmail.

New Only thing I'm worried about
What happens if they kill gmail? I thought Reader was safe, now that's gone.
--

Drew
New Reader has waning interest.
GMAIL is doubling in size about every 9 months.

Plus, for paid service, I've gone from 10GB of mail storage in 2009 to 30GB of mail storage now... and they use a compressed format. they 9GB I'm using right now... would be well over 40GB of mail on my server.

E-mail and Apps are tied together hugely... separate services like Reader was... aren;t going away anytime in the next 10+ year... if ever.

New It's a cornerstone of their world
Advertising on web pages requires them to track everything you do and play the ads accordingly. Lots of overhead, and they can never be sure it is targeted correctly. Advertising in gmail allows them to just scan your email.

It's how they compete with MS directly, killing Exchange boxes.

It is an income stream in itself, with LOTS of paid customers.

And MOST important, if they make noises about it going away, the NSA will force them to keep it.

It's not going away.
New There is a Migration tool that...
That once you give it your login crdentails for the remote e-mail service...

GMAIL will go and search look for folder and make labels for them and download and label all of them.

It worked great in 2009, just recently it worked really excellently for another company I migrated. The whole company migrated from another webmail/exchange service in about 3 days all 8M plus messages from the exchange service they were using was migrated.

They have saved over $3000/year and now have collaboration tools and pages and etc...
