New The Head Beast of the Beast Speaks on Re-org.
http://allthingsd.co...nouncement-memos/
New Whole lotta marketing-speak there. Any meat?
New one interface everywhere with one dev platform to do it all
or so my brother explained
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 58 years. meep
New Wasn't that .NET?

New Galaxy, IIRC.

But as Altmann pointed out, Galaxy was a bit of a unique beast - http://forum.iwethey...iwt?postid=209985

Cheers,
Scott.
New The .Nets
- There's the .Net framework, which includes WinForms and WPF/XAML for desktop apps (and ASP.Net for web apps).
- There's Silverlight, which is (was) a significant subset of WPF/XAML for browser plugin apps.
- There's the variant of .Net, based on Silverlight, For Windows Phone 7.X apps.
- There's WinRT, a native code reimplementation of alot of .Net and WPF/XAML exposed as a modernized COM API. It can be used from native code, .Net languages, and JS via WinJS. It is primarily for Windows Store Apps (ie: Metro, ie: tablet apps), though some of the non-UI bits can be used by desktop apps.
- There's whatever they're calling the .Net on Windows Phone 8 (WinPRT?), which is much closer to WinRT on Windows 8.

They're trying to unify those last two APIs. Unfortunately they are trying to unify the user experience across the related OSen as well.

Oh and there's some variation of WinRT for XBone too.

And there's also the .Net Compact framework, the .Net Micro Framework.

Hope that clears things up.

New rofl. Thanks.
New That seems ... schizophrenic?
Microsoft really don't know how to build a framework that can scale from the tiny to the huge, do they? Mind you, it is a Really Hard Thing to do, so I'm not surprised.

Wade.

New you forgot MVC

Satan (impatiently) to Newcomer: The trouble with you Chicago people is, that you think you are the best people down here; whereas you are merely the most numerous.
- - - Mark Twain “Pudd’nhead Wilson’s New Calendar,” 1897
New Not true either, quelle surprise
The APIs are different even between Surface RT and Surface Pro because a different team writes everything there: Windows, Windows on Surface, Windows on RT, Windows on XBox, whatever. Only the name and a general flavor is shared.

-scott
Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New Here's a pretty good synopsis.

New Thanks.
Maybe good for them, maybe not. Dunno.

It seems like a defensive move, though. XBox seems to be in danger already (what with the always-online fiasco, etc.) - bringing it inside seems like a good way to crush it even more. They're flailing around while Apple continues to eat their lunch.

They'd probably do better if they forced Ballmer out and maybe even thought about breaking up the company or spinning off big chunks (like XBox) while retaining some ownership stake. It seems like they're still acting as if they're entitled to the whole of every market they play in even though they are using friendly buzzwords...

Cheers,
Scott.
New They're reeling.
I still have a very dear friend working for them. He's been a blue for 20+ years. I hope this doesn't hit him too hard.
New The epitome of tl;dr, that..
