Whoever designed those things was really stupid.
No reliable way to tell which side is up or down or left or right, on either the cable or the box.

There used to be.
The original USB spec said you had to put the logo on the top of the plug and orient the socket so that logo was up when you plugged it in. But they didn't police it or enforce it, so many manufacturers put their sockets any old which way.
Fortunately it was designed to be difficult to damage if you try to insert it upside-down. (I think someone at Apple got really sick of this problem and that's why they created the Lightning connector. But apart from the fact it's owned by Apple, that connector has other problems - however that's a topic for another day.) Wade. Just Add Story http://justaddstory.wordpress.com/
