john maynard on guns
https://www.facebook...62&type=1&theater
Today I swung my front door wide open and placed my Stevens 320 right in the doorway. I gave it 6 shells, and noticing that it had no legs, even placed it in my wheelchair to help it get around. I then left it alone and went about my business. While I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the neighbor boy across the street mowed the yard, a girl walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars stopped at the stop sign right in front of our house. After about an hour, I checked on the gun. It was still sitting there in the wheelchair, right where I had left it. It hadnÂt rolled itself outside. It certainly hadnÂt killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it had been presented to do so. In fact, it hadnÂt even loaded itself. Well you can imagine my surprise, with all the media hype about how dangerous guns are and how they kill people. Either the media is wrong, and itÂs the misuse of guns by PEOPLE that kills people, or I'm in possession of the laziest gun in the world. Alright, well IÂm off to check on my spoons. I hear theyÂre making people fat.

Straw man, actually
A particularly stupid variation on the theme.
This one is almost the same, but not quite as idiotic:
I left a tank full of gas in my car ALL DAY and it didn't explode in flames, therefore the gasoline fight at the start of Zoolander is just good clean (and very man-pretty) fun. People should be encouraged to play in gasoline, just make sure there is no source of ignition.

You know what the point was.
When people get upset, they can do stupid and dangerous things. They lash out with weapons in ways that they wouldn't when they weren't upset.
Pistorius shot his girl friend with a gun. She's dead.
If he didn't have a gun in the house, he wouldn't have fired a gun at her, and she wouldn't be dead.
Now, she's dead, and he's likely to spend many years in prison.
All because he had a gun in his house.
:-(
HTH.
Cheers,
Scott.

She was in the bathroom.
He supposedly shot her through the bathroom door.
Frying pans don't travel through doors very well.
Yes, we all know that guns aren't the only way people are murdered. That doesn't change the fact that she was shot to death (apparently shot several times).
Cheers,
Scott.

He would have had to...
break through the door... and then get all bloody and very personal with her.
To much effort required.
how would *YOU* like it if *YOU* were on the target side of the door. Would you have had much more of a chance with an AXE? A Knife? And Baseball bat?
If the shooter wanted you (that target) dead, the shooter would have had to expend a lot more energy to get the target (you) that way... As it was, involvement in the shooter's action was a (muti-) trigger pull to ignite and expend the powder to expel the bullets. MUCH easier than chopping down the door and then chop the target up close and personal. Much cleaner and easier to kill from a distance...
Of course. If John's shotgun was accidentally taken by a 5 year old and the 5 year killed themselves... whoops. Bad owner for not having his weapon under his control.
Idiot.

go suck on a cricket bat
South Africa's well-respected City Press newspaper reported that a bloodied cricket bat found at Pistorius's home was the central piece of evidence against him. Citing sources close to the investigation, the paper said Steenkamp's skull was crushed and police requested that Pistorius undergo drug tests

Yeah, Lanza used pistols and the rifle was in the trunk.
The Sandy Hook shooting had nothing to do with the rifle and the mass of ammunition he had. Of course, of course. </snark>
The gun nuts will spin anything to show that it wasn't a gun that killed her.
Let's see what the CityPress story actually says, shall we?
http://www.citypress...-against-oscar-2/
The bedclothes were crumpled. ÂIt was clear that both of them had slept in the bed, said a police source.
One cartridge was found in the bedroom and the police suspect Oscar may have Âchased her and fired the first shot before Steenkamp could lock herself inside the toilet.
ÂThe suspicion is that the first shot, in the bedroom, hit her in the hip. She then ran and locked herself in the toilet. She was doubled over because of the pain. He fired three more shots. She probably covered her head, which is why the bullet also went through her hand, said a source.
Steenkamp was shot in the head, hip, arm and hand.
While all of what we know is just what has been fed to the press thus far, it still looks like his gun was the cause of her death. The cricket bat could have been used afterward for all we know. :-(
HTH.
Cheers,
Scott.

Either you agree with the ancient koan,

..or you Don't.
It's really simple, though, from my POV:
Those who lavish Attention on instruments Designed to Kill Things
(as opposed to, say, game things that score hand/eye coordination==All Fantasy skillz kinda stuff
of the same ilk as tennis or hockey or moto-cross)
Those who become obsessed with assembling enough gunzn'ammo to hold off several platoons?
are fucked in the head: *their* daily fantasies cannot escape from being about --some--how

Pistorius indicted for murder.
http://www.nytimes.c...ar-pistorius.html
At the hearing Monday, the state prosecution released a copy of its lengthy indictment of Mr. Pistorius, outlining its case that he intentionally shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, while she was behind a locked bathroom door on the morning of last Feb. 14.
[...]
Mr. Pistorius has admitted opening fire in his upscale home in the South African capital, Pretoria, but he says that he believed he had been shooting an intruder. The prosecution contends that Mr. Pistorius planned to kill whoever was behind the door, and that even if he mistakenly killed Ms. Steenkamp, he is still guilty of murder.
There is no death penalty in South Africa, where the mandatory sentence for premeditated murder is life, with a minimum of 25 years in prison.
I haven't found the actual full indictment yet.
Cheers,
Scott.

6 years.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-36719561South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
It comes after his initial five-year conviction for manslaughter was changed to murder last December on appeal.
He was taken immediately to jail. Both the prosecution and defence can appeal, but his lawyers say they will not.
Pistorius, 29, shot Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door in February 2013.
He admitted shooting her, but said he had mistaken Ms Steenkamp for an intruder and acted out of fear.
In an hour-long session, Judge Thokozile Masipa said mitigating circumstances, such as rehabilitation and remorse, outweighed aggravating factors for deviating from the prescribed 15-year sentence. Hmmm... Cheers, Scott.

As usual, the mitigating circumstances were . . .
. . that he was a celebrity.
