New Boehner can't get enough votes for show vote
http://livewire.talk...an-b-vote?ref=fpa
In a stunning defeat, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) called off a vote Thursday night on his Plan B to avert the fiscal cliff, citing a lack of support from his own party.
This is a major failure for Boehner, he couldn't get enough votes on his plan for the show vote. The vote was purely symbolic, to show that the Republicans had a plan of their own, and they couldn't manage that.

This has significant political consequences, as it means Boehner doesn't have a good read on what the party members want nor much ability to control their votes. That means there is little reason to negotiate with him, because he can't promise to bring in Republican votes. It may also signal that Boehner is about to be overthrown, but that is less certain. The Republicans in the House are so divided that it will be hard to secure a solid voting block to replace him.

New Boehner is deflated

New Deflated?
It's worse than that! It's more like inverted and forming a cavity. As a Speaker he has become a pussy to the teabaggers. He's not even worth having the job of kissing Pelosi's butt.

The man disgusts me.
Alex
New Geez, you're back!
Old news, I see, but welcome nevertheless.

cordially,
New Re: Geez, you're back!
Yes, indeed.

Every time I see your posts, I am reminded of our last interaction relative to Hilary Clinton. While you were wrong about me being an outright misogynist, you were quite right about her talents. She has been a superb Secretary of State and would make a fine president.
Alex
New Oh, dear. Did I say that?
Well, I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

The prospect of a Hilary Clinton presidency has never warmed the cockles of my heart for reasons having nothing to do with her qualifications and character. Rather, I am nervous about the dynastic tendencies that have been creeping ever more conspicuously into our national politics. What would the presidential sequence of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama-Clinton say about us?

cordially,
New Well, there's what you said,
what you think you said, and what I thought you said at the time. The word skank comes to mind.

I'm with you on the dynastic tendencies bit.

Already Chelsey is being global exposure with a role in the Clinton Global Initiative. Generation after generation, the Kennedys can't stay out of politics either. And, on the right, there's always mention of Jeb Bush.
Alex
New Yup. The lazy press at work.
It's so much easier for political reporters to build a narrative in their heads, to hang out with the people they have always hung out with, etc., than to do the grunt work of seeing what's going on in the parties in the states.

I think one thing we can count on, no matter how inconvenient it is, that the personalities of politics will be unpredictable in the next 20 years or so.

I could be wrong, though... :-/

Cheers,
Scott.

New How so?
For what party?

You think the teabaggers are going to be crushed, or what?

You think the Republicans can throw away their 30+ year history of appealing to white resentment and the Democrats are going to roll over and let them take the Hispanic vote?

2020 is only 2 elections from now.

The national Republican brand is toxic. Things are similar to 1964, but worse, for them. They don't have a Nixon to save them this time.

People like O'Malley on the D side won't roll over for a Bush of any sort.

IOW, I don't see it.

YMMV.

Cheers,
Scott.

New IOW, he continues to be the weakest Speaker in recent times.
New Pierce weighs in
What happened to John Boehner last night, when the feral children put Boehner's balls inside a Christmas pinata and invited themselves to take a whack, couldn't have happened to a nicer fellow. Boehner himself chose to be king of the dipwads. He offered himself up as Speaker knowing full well that, in 2010, the country had elected itself a Congress straight out of the more fantastical chapters of Gulliver's Travels. He had to have watched what happened thereafter, when the president put a deal on the table in 2011 that made him look like Dwight Eisenhower on a bad day, and Boehner couldn't sell it to the vandals in his caucus.

cordially,
New Heard some conjecture that...
...Pelosi may try to form a coalition with her 201 Democrats, and perhaps 20-25 less-than-whackjob Republicans to get a "working majority" (emphasis on the first syllable). The 25 Repo's in the coalition would choose the speaker, and the 201 would vote for him/her (It's gonna be a him, of course), thereby insuring that some stuff, at least would get done.

While a bit dangerous, if it works it will marginalize the TeaBaggers.

New Difficult to do...
There are few Blue Dog Democrats left, and the rest of them are significantly more liberal. Even the moderate Republicans will not find much common ground.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New The Republican leadership has to stop playing Lucy.
[edit:] Title, and below.

There's no sense in Pelosi or anyone else trying to save the Republicans from themselves just yet. The Republican leadership can't lead enough of their own members to get anything done, so Pelosi can't and shouldn't do their job for them.

Boehner's attempts at playing Nancy Lucy (of Peanuts fame) with the football is biting him in the butt. His own members are taking the football away from him before Charlie Brown is even on the field.

If Boehner wants to get anything done, he should start by giving at least tacit approval to the Discharge Petition - http://www.govexec.c...s-tax-cuts/59910/ If he wants to continue to strangle his Speakership via the teabaggers, that's his business. But he has ways out if he is willing to take them.

My take is that he's a prisoner of the reactionaries. He won't be able to please them, so the House will continue to be dysfunctional </sp>. Cantor is too smart to want to take the job, so Boehner is stuck with it. He won't resign as Speaker. I expect only incremental, Continuing-Resolution/Kick-the-Can-type actions from them for the next couple of years. We'll continue to muddle through because the insane House members will continue to throw tantrums and gum up the works, but they won't be able to get what they want.

My $0.02.

Cheers,
Scott.
