Paul Waldman on Benghazi
But now, some Republicans, particularly John McCain and Lindsay Graham, are essentially saying that this horrifying cover-up was quite possibly the greatest crime in the history of the United States government, and if we're going to get to the bottom of it nothing short of a select committeeÂa "Watergate-style committee," as it is being referred to by reportersÂwill do.
Who knows what it might uncover? Were there CIA whistleblowers whose bodies are now lying at the bottom of the Potomac? Was David Petraeus being blackmailed? Are William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright involved? Did Susan Rice fly to Tripoli, have a steamy liaison with a clone of Ayman al-Zawahiri created in a secret underground laboratory, then go to Benghazi where she personally killed Ambassador Chris Stevens with a hat pin? We won't know unless we spin this out into a multi-week story! So what's going on here? I can sum it up in two words: scandal envy.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

Will McCain and Graham now back down?
I wouldn't count on it. They're too busy being on TV.

Not even after this
Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has admitted that the CIA and intelligence community approved U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan RiceÂs talking points before she made her much-derided Sept. 16 appearance on several Sunday news shows to discuss the attacks in Benghazi. King, one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administrationÂs response to the attack, came to his conclusion following testimony from former CIA Director David Petraeus.

So, let's get this straight...
The same intelligence community that signed off on WMDs in Iraq has been so GREATLY improved -- under Obama-- that they should be able to determine that an attack on an embassy was really a 9/11 inspired attack rather than a inspired by a film....
...in less than 4 days.
And THAT is what Republicans want us to believe?

Not sure that's it in this case.
True, a lot of them can't tolerate a black guy in the White House, but I would guess the issue is more fundamental. He's not a Republican. So they attack. Bill Clinton was a moderate republican with a D after his name, so they attacked him incessantly. Obama is less moderate, but he's still got that D affiliation so bark, bark, bark... They can't help themselves. They are operating at a herd beast level. Once they get one of their own back in, everything will be OK again. They will still be competing with Holsteins at an intellectual level, but that's sorta normal.

Re: Once they get one of their own back in
Um, I think that's what's really pissing them off. It was bad enough when Clinton (a White Guy) was a better Republican than they could field got into power , but seriously, a Black Guy, whose a better Republican than they can field? Jeebus, their heads must be spinning off!

marian on what it's like to be a US diplomat.

I am a State Department brat and every single country we lived in had a revolution while we were there. I had a personal body guard for a year when I was 12 who escorted me whenever I left the house. Our house was guarded by soldiers of the host country and we had a Marine in the house for a year.I donÂt claim to argue from authority but a couple of points that I observed:
