New Air conditioning question
I just bought a new house. The AC was "roughed in" (air vents, piping etc.).
Now I need to get it finished. I had a guy come around to give me a quote.
He quoted me $8200 to finish the system.
I asked him what specific components he would be installing for that price.
He stated:
YORK H4DB030S06 - air conditioning unit
YORK H4DB036S06 - air conditioning unit
YORK F2RP030H06 - air handler
YORK F2RP036H06 - air handler

I went to [link|http://www.airconditioningexchange.com/|http://www.aircondi...xchange.com/] and looked up the prices.
The lot came to $2417.

My question is........................$5783 for labor?
How hard can this be? Isn't it just connecting some parts together
and filling it with the refrigerant stuff?

Am I being gouged?

I do have a couple of other quotes on the way next week.....I'm just curious
if anybody has any experience with this.

New Sounds very high.
You've got to get several quotes. Prices can vary by many thousands of dollars.

I've got a 35+ year old house.

Last year I got a 2.5 ton Trane XL14 compressor, a variable speed air handler, a 2-speed 100,000 BTU 94% Trane gas furnace, and an AprilAire whole house humidifier, new refrigerant lines, a new plastic slab for the compressor, installed, with a 5 year extended warranty, for a little over $6300. Quotes on the system were $63xx, $64xx and $95xx.

Installation is important - you want to be sure they do a careful job. Leaks are a killer in A/C systems.

If other people quote a similar price, then it's probably a fair price. If the prices vary by more than a few hundred dollars, then someone is gouging.

Best of luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New There's more than the hardware.
And I'm not talking about mere labour. The required refrigerant costs, too.

Sounds about a day's work, BTW, for two or three people. But get several quotes - the difference is a lot and he might be overcharging you just to see if he can get away with it.

New My brother-in-law ha the same thing
only they charged him $3000USD for the same thing.

Turns out his old system went kablooey because the people who put a new roof and siding on, had put the flume on too tight and it caused the air to get blocked and go back to the unit.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
