New The Ecuadorians have opened a can of worms
Assange is wanted in Sweden for sex crimes, not political crimes - which are what asylum is for.

The Ecuadorians should have bade him bugger off and face the music.
New It's not Sweden
As I remember it, Assange was concerned that Sweden would bundle him off to the U.S. once they had him.
Regards,
-scott
Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New Yup.
I suspect there will be an eventual compromise, or perhaps he'll be there long enough for any statute of limitations to expire on the potential assault charges. Of course, new charges can always be brought...

A subsequent offer by Ecuador to allow Swedish investigators to interview Mr Assange inside the embassy was rejected.

The Wikileaks website Mr Assange founded published a mass of leaked diplomatic cables that embarrassed several governments, particularly the US's, in 2010.

Mr Assange says he fears that if extradited to Sweden, he will then be passed on to the American authorities.

Assange has a pretty weak hand though...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Pretty much

Speaking in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, Patiño said that his country had offered to allow Assange's extradition to Sweden if it would guarantee that he would not be moved to the US, but that Sweden had not agreed. He denounced the UK threat to carry out its arrest orders, calling it an attempt at "blackmail," and said that Ecuador believed that Assange could not get a fair trial in the US.
Apparently Ecuador offered to hand him over if Sweden would promise not to ship him off to the US and Sweden refused.
New Oh FU
Sex crimes?
He had enjoyable voluntary sex with 1 woman.

Then, several days later, he had voluntary enjoyable sex with another woman.

Each of them agree to this!

These women got together, got pissed, and said he convinced them to have sex in some manner that was enough of a misdirection or lie to constitue a crime, ie: "Hey baby, I'll love you forever" is a CRIMINAL OFFENSE on par with RAPE if the love ends too soon.

You guys bent over for us to ensure we'd have him in Guantanamo soon enough.

I hope your embassies get firebombed around the world if you walk into that one. You are asking for it.
New Eh?
All I said was that he's wanted in Sweden for crimes involving sex.

AKA sex crimes.

Science FACT!

No need to get all panty-waisted about it.
New I don't think that is the primary issue here
Apparently the sex crime involved condoms breaking; it wasn't a violent crime. Settling that out isn't the issue either. It looks REALLY like he was set up and Sweden will roll over faster than the UK did to turn him over to the US, which now is operating as a rogue nation. We are no longer a nation of laws at all. We are going to try an Australian for TREASON??? Ecuador is being the humanitarian, good guy here.

This whole issue has nothing to do with broken condoms. The rulers of the US want him, and if they get him, they can, and probably will, hold him forever without charging him, much less taking him to court. If your people wish to be complicit in this, you have my sympathy.
New No, you said a bit more
The Ecuadorians should have bade him bugger off and face the music.

The music in this case is the sound of water being poured down his throat.

When you exclaim SEX CRIMES, you are voicing your deep approval for this guy to be taken away.

Let's take that a bit further.
You ever have sex without being married?
Any position other than standard missionary?
Used your mouth?
Were you traveling in the US?
You were committing SEX CRIMES all over the place.
Stupid laws on the books.
Supposedley never enforced. Until the cop needs a reason, and then there it is.

This is a classic ploy to keep the stupid people on your side. They couldn't get anything real on him, but they managed to push SEX CRIMES into the headlines.

Yesterday, less than 24 hours after threatening to rescind the building’s diplomatic protections and forcibly enter it, the Foreign Office was forced into a humiliating climbdown.

It accepted the need for a ‘a negotiated solution’ to the deadlock and was reduced to insisting that Mr Assange would be arrested if he tried to leave.

Nyah nyah.

New Plus, too:
Sweden's judicial system is not descended from the same one the current English, US and Australian systems are. And their laws about sex crimes are also laid out quite differently, which is mostly why the question of whether it was rape or not is unclear. This undoubtedly makes the international extradition treaties complicated.

It doesn't explain why Sweden couldn't do some questioning of Assange in the UK, though it might help to explain that it might make sense to the Swedish prosecutor.

If Assange does manage to get to Ecuador, I wonder if he will be able to get to Australia from there. He is rumoured to have applied to run for Federal Parliament which might be fun to see.

Wade.
