New The enemy is smarter and better equipped than you
The traders employ quants who are paid huge amounts to obsess over trading patterns for much of the time they're awake. They program computers to automatically read the news faster than you. Long-term investor? Good luck finding a good time to sell.

It's a warzone and the computers aren't just fighting to get that marginally good deal first, they create unnecessary trading patterns to fool each other. If a market goes haywire, the controllers will sit there, wondering if it's just a ruse by a competitor.

And just remember your pensions are involved in this.

I'm not prejudiced. I hate everyone equally.
New Good points.
I've never been a stock picker. A few times I've played with the idea - like when AMD was at $14 about 5 years ago and seemed to me to be a bargain - http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:AMD - but I never acted on it... ;-)

Our retirement savings is mostly in 401(k)s - bonds and an S&P500-like stock fund. When it comes time to sell, it won't be based on any particular stock's performance.

Yeah, the "big boys" do lots of stuff that small traders can't hope to compete with any more. I wasn't aware that they try to push the charts around to trip-up their competition, but that makes sense.

I have thought that stock timing was a foolish game for a long time, but until seeing that animated GIF at Felix's place, I didn't realize how much the game has changed recently. Unless a financial transaction tax is put in place, I can't see this doing anything but getting worse...

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Regulation...
Remind me again why we want more deregulation? For some reason I don't think it's working.

New Because regulation costs...
Money to the Rich peoples.

Can't have that.
New You mean it cramps their style.
And puts all these "rules" in the way to stop them Doing What They Want. It'd be nice if they were honest about it for once.

New Sometimes they're explicit.
You f—ing Americans. Who are you to tell us, the rest of the world, that we’re not going to deal with Iranians.

Here's hoping they're crushed into itsy-bitsy bits.

Cheers,
Scott.
