New Morons

Ok, so who here has enough callous to walk on them (as long as you keep moving)?

I probably do on the back and front, but not the arch. Walk like a dancer.
New Actually...
My parents took my sisters and I to a Robbins fire walking event when I was in my teens.

Callouses have nothing to do with it. As long as you keep moving, the sweat on your feet provides enough protection. My sister hesitated and got a small burn.

Robbins is a complete shyster regardless (part of his talk was trying to convince everyone that the germ theory of disease was false, and that he could cure AIDS through dietary changes), but fire walking isn't a mystery.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New Actually... :-)
It's mostly thermal conductivity that's the physics behind it. The thermal conductivity of carbon in that form is very low. It's also why similar forms of carbon were used as thermal ties on the Space Shuttle - http://www.keithcomp...ticle%201-23.aspx.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who has never done it himself.)
New Physics professors?
Back in the 70's there was a professor at Cleveland State U. that was noted for demonstrations, open to the public, to advance interests in physics. He had laser shows, sonic demonstrations, and once a year, walk on coals. I think one year he got a slight (second degree?) burn on a toe, but that was the extent of the damage over a several year period (at least.)

I can't remember his name, but I saw a couple of his demos. I went to Case instead of CSU so I didn't take his courses, but they probably would have been interesting. He was a good speaker, very organized, and quite passionate about his field.
New Jearl Walker?
I think he is all about physics and the unbelievable stuff... like the Leidenfrost effect.

Which, in essence, is liquid being held up by vapor over a surface hot enough to turn things into vapor.

Its a neat demonstration to do with firewalking.
New I think so. It sounds familiar.
