And, re Oil-rich countries, interested only in Amusement
--because they Have no authentic raison d'etre--with $billions just daily falling into robed laps..
Here, I believe is the extrapolation of where [Our Version of 24/7 Distraction] shall soon follow: http://www.huffingto...il_n_1586272.html (And for those impatiently awaiting ... the next 6 mos? 12? ... 3??) I give you: http://www.huffingto...ne4_n_885860.html Verily I say unto thee (and to 'dose') PLEASE take a Breather from a zeitgeist-on-afterburners. For say ... ... a YEAR maybe? (What's the overall Trash Index from conception-->landfill of these millions of new energy-intensive (in fabrication) and Rare-Earth squandering ... corporate-enrichment mechanisms??) [Etc.] Yeah.. Grumpy moi, reminding that, F=MA and all the stuff that follows.. Ain't Been Repealed. Anyway, in times of normal consciousness, the WWDC show would look like A Hoot (if only it could be taken for the fantasy-movie and not a roadmap.) aka: Jeez, will I be able to live with all the auto-social-spews apparently ON by default? (If the sucker will even run on an early '08 iMac..? Don't fail me Now, Apple! I CAN"T possibly surrender back to the Redmond Script Kiddies. Ever.) :oTpy |

That jetpack video ...
The perfect storm of VIP suck-upitude and corporate PR. They couldn't have sucked more of the fun out of a frankly pretty-cool event if they'd tried.

Re: And, re Oil-rich countries, interested only in Amusement
Our computers:
1 2005 Mac Mini G4, starting to show signs of giving up the ghost. Plus, we can't update a good deal of the software on it any longer. I'll probably either Freecycle it, give it to a neighbor, or sell it on Craig's List. 1 2006 MacBook Pro, soon to be replaced because it's limited to 2G of RAM and useless to me now as a portable development machine. The damn thing runs hotter than a jet engine too. I haven't replaced it yet mainly because it has a gorgeous 17" matte screen and the best keyboard Apple has made to this date. 1 2006 Mac Pro, still going strong and used as my main development machine. 1 2007 iMac, my eldest son's machine, which will probably replace the Mini downstairs when he goes off to college this Fall. Hmm... maybe I'll give him the MBP... the only problem with that is I'd want to replace the hard drive with an SSD first because he's death on electronics. 1 2009 MacBook, my wife's machine, works just fine and no need to consider replacement. I keep computers as long as most people keep cars (my current car is a 1997, incidentally), and replace them only in dire necessity. In my experience the Mac hardware keeps its usefulness longer than PC hardware manages. But then again, I stopped buying PC hardware years ago so what do I know. ;-) Not everyone is a gotta-have-it fanboi. Regards,
-scott Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson. |

No snark at the IGM intended.. :-0
(I mean.. I'd like to Own a Veyron, too ... for maybe a week?--insurance etc. paid by someone-not-moi.)
Then too, your machines are tools and Apple may be today's closest-thing to Tektronix of yore --whose test/measurement equipment was also distinguished for its physical beauty (of innards: ceramic terminal strips and like that) while being uncontested as Worldwide state-of-art: before that phrase got cliched-to-death by Admen. The subject weirdos, however (while mentioning price of each device!) appear not ever to have thought about what Else they might do with much more than Half-vast cash, simply: just get More of the same stuff. Got a Veyron? get several in different colors. One cannot envy such a mindset, it is so impoverished--but there it Is: A digital oxymoron too, vast wealth / the poverty of a focus only on Me-Mine+More. And flocks of servants obviously in full-dread of ever disappointing a Royal with a speck on a $1M carpet. And Rmoney waiting in the (our?) wings :-/ |
