It also gives the impression of...
...a colony of super-ants rather than a super-colony of ants.
So yes, it's inifity - maybe it's just the result of their last census :) Regardless, they're going a great job of telling the world they're a very anty establishment :)

Vastly overblown
It isn't as if there is any collection of ant tunnels that cross the Alps and every one of them feeds the other. They just don't attack each other on sight. That's a far cry from an "ant colony from Italy to Spain".
