New Microsoft - Fun with Vista
I have a doctor client who bought a high-end (for the time) computer running Windows Vista. Later she bought and install the Windows 7 upgrade, particularly because a medical training site she deals with requires it.

This week things went wrong and she needed to re-install. Got Vista on and put in the Win 7 DVD. "Windows 7 upgrade requires at least Vista Service Pack 1".

So I told her how to go to Microsoft Update and to keep going back until she was offered a Service Pack.

Well, 97 updates and a couple hours later Windows Update said, "Service Pack 1 is no longer supported and cannot be obtained from Windows Update".

It did not offer Service Pack 2 because Service Pack 1 is a prerequisite to Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 is not cumulative.

Of course, Service Pack 1 is still available from the Download Center, but by this time a normal user is totally confused.

Perhaps Vista is such and embarrassment Microsoft is trying to get everyone to junk every computer that ever had Vista on it.

New SP1's install is actually fairly broken.
Which makes it even more puzzling that SP2 isn't cumulative.

I'm trying to upgrade my Vista virtual machine at work, largely to fix an issue with the activation service that believes it has been interefered with (it hasn't). SP1 won't install. It gets most of the way, and then decides some updates haven't been configured correctly. Typical of Microsoft, it won't tell me which ones, nor will just make the broken ones fix themselves (like Debian's package system can do).

Last resort is to just start over from the DVD-ROM. Again, typical Microsoft.

New Unless the drive died
Don't format and go back to Vista. The Windows 7 Upgrade DVD will bundle up the Users, Program Files and Windows directories, put them aside, and then reinstall in the regular locations.
New Well, it went pretty smoothly, but . . .
Starting with Vista no service pack, it has got to have take a good 8 hours before the last Windows 7 patch was installed - and that's using Vista SP1 off a CD.

Main problem with this machine is Windows startup had become totally allergic to nVidia video cards. A brand new one worked a lot worse than the original card, which didn't work worth (excrement). Fortunately I was able to get ATI cards and those worked fine.
New Makes you wonder why.
By which I mean, what is so bizarre about the Windows architecture that it takes so long to upgrade? And how come they don't seem to spend any time addressing this?

I know there were people who used to install Debian 1.something and then upgrade it all way through to the current version. For kicks. Might take hours, but it works. I'm damn sure you can't do that with Windows.
