It was several years ago - before Windows 95 and many people didn't use Windows at all - and we'd just introduced a virus scanner on the network login. By now avery had gotten used to it and the initial flurry of Stoned disks had been weeded out. Then we had a report of a user who got a virus "message" on their screen and called for help.

It very quickly transpired that the "message" was a standard VINES DOS message (black text on purple on line 25) that people normally saw from the print spooler and the email service. This was highly suspicious all by itself. About the same time this came to light, the manager of the section reported that someone else in her group had been playing a prank. Hmm. They clearly got cold feet and confessed when they began hearing how scared they got their victim...
