Fires like these are becoming more common up north, as the permafrost thaws... :-(

New It's a muck fire.
For the rain to help, it needs to soak into the deep organic peat, where the fire has been smoldering.


Florida has had these before. Usually they just have to burn themselves out.

Before farmers and developers drained natural wetlands, muck fires were much less common because low-lying areas stayed underwater throughout the year.
