New New York over-reacting...
Mandatory Curfews and evacs happening right now in "certain" parts of the City.

Broadway has closed for the Weekend.

Wow... come on people, settle down.

I think this explains Jim's Stupid people post on Facebook.
New They know how to cope with snow...
... but not sea water?

New Most blizzards don't have 75+ mph winds

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

New Don't think so.
The models are continuing to predict that it'll pass right over NYC. The 5 pm update shows it as a Tropical Storm over CT at 1 pm Sunday.

http://www.wundergro...ters/article.html

Since tides are at their highest levels of the month this weekend due to the new moon, storm surge flooding will be at a maximum during the high tidal cycles that will occur at 8 pm Saturday night and 8 am Sunday morning. Wherever Irene happens to be at those times, the storm surge damage potential will be maximized. I continue to give a 20% chance that a 3 - 4 foot storm surge high enough to over-top the Manhattan flood walls and swamp the New York City subway system will occur on Sunday. The latest 11 am probabilistic storm surge map from NHC shows a 20 - 30% chance of a storm surge in excess of 3 feet in New York Harbor (Figure 4.) Keep in mind that these maps are calculated for normal tide level, and this weekend's high tides will be nearly 1 foot above normal.

Even though Irene continues to weaken, it's still a huge storm with a lot of water. Bloomberg's doing the right thing.

Cheers,
Scott.
New We shall see.
New Doesn't work that way
It's the right thing or the wrong thing to do. We don't have to wait until afterwards to see if it was the right thing.

Is wearing your seat belt the right thing to do? Of course it is. If you go off the road into a river and the belt jams and you die because you can't get out, it was still the right thing to do, given what you knew at the time.

New not at all
would have been nice if Nagin had "over reacted".
New New York, no. Philly, yes.
Pics this morning showed they were about 2 feet of surge from a catastrophe...that's close enough to earn the mayor a pass. North Holland tunnel flooded. Seaport and lower battery took water...

It was a smart thing to do.
Sure, understanding today's complex world of the future is a little like having bees live in your head. But...there they are.
New Beep gets the prize for #50,000 ^^^
New Starting to see some Philly pics
its all flooding issues...couple of trees. Some of the flooding is pretty bad, though...so maybe not even over-reacting there either. (though I've heard some of the news coverage was quite over the top.

New The radar showed PA getting lots of rain yesterday...
Just about every time I checked, PA was getting red bands of stuff while we were mostly in the yellow. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's very bad in Philly.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Lots of rain and flooding but not much else
For whatever reason we avoided the worst of the damage here, it's all flooding problems. Things where pretty jammed up today and it's likely to be bad Monday, but it should be fine after that. Nothing like the kind of damage that other areas took.

New Some photos around
here are some photos I took today at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, NJ

New Lots of water. :-(
New That's what parks *should* look like in a flood
If city planners had any sense, occasional-use public spaces should be located on all flood plains. When the water comes, I'd rather see photos of the tops of swingsets sticking out than the tops of houses.
