New What about backlight?
I've seen some discussion about how you get less eyestrain if you have some light behind your monitor. Don't know if that was talking about movie watching or typical computer work, but it was something about the high contrast being hard on the eyes.

New No simple answer.
Professional video editors prefer a bright wall behind their monitors, yet cinemas are dark.

I have a standing lamp I always turn on with my projector instead of the ceiling light. The ambient light makes the image more watchable.
