That kinda depends on what else you need the room for.
Besides, most projectors now are bright enough that you don't need the room all that dark. I've got mine pointing at a wall in my living room. And I say "living room" quite deliberately as it also has most of my books, all of my CDs and DVDs, my dining table, several (other) PCs and lots of other detritus of life.

Dark isn't because the projector is dim

What about backlight?
I've seen some discussion about how you get less eyestrain if you have some light behind your monitor. Don't know if that was talking about movie watching or typical computer work, but it was something about the high contrast being hard on the eyes.

No simple answer.
Professional video editors prefer a bright wall behind their monitors, yet cinemas are dark.
I have a standing lamp I always turn on with my projector instead of the ceiling light. The ambient light makes the image more watchable. Wade. Static Scribblings http://staticsan.blogspot.com/
