Three independent studies of the sun's insides, surface, and upper atmosphere all predict that the next solar cycle will be significantly delayed—if it happens at all. Normally, the next cycle would be expected to start roughly around 2020.

Multiple lines of evidence suggest the next sun spot cycle will be very weak, possibly hitting the minimum level of no sun spots at all. This will be a boon to space travel, as it indicates a decade long period of little or no solar flare activity.

Historical evidence suggests some connection between solar activity and Earth's climate, with the Earth cooling during period of low sun spot activity. However, this is largely unexplored territory.
