The news came as eight Libyan army officers including five generals appeared at a news conference arranged by the Italian government in Rome, saying they were part of a group of as many as 120 military officials and soldiers who defected from the Gadhafi regime in recent days.

Looks like Gadhafi's army is coming apart at the seems. This is probably being played up to put pressure on him, but any defecting generals from an army as small as his is a big problem. Gadhafi is also suddenly interested in a negotiated settlement, but is still holding out to remain in power so far. He probably figures (correctly) that he can broker the best deal with the African Union. If he can secure a deal with them, he can leverage it into acceptance by the EU and US.
