Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Suicide Bomber recruitment fee rises. Many new takers.
Heard on NPR en passant: I *think* it was Iraq [??] which has been offering $10K USD to any family which will provide a young cannon-fodder to blow self + any old innocent Israeli person into oblivion. Recently raised to $25K - the report postulates that, recruitment rose with the Better Pay.

Alas.. the Theological Rules state that 'martyrdom' is NOT martyrdom wherever there is any ego involvement whatsoever (my paraphrase of the usually turgid, vague and otherwise asinine wording of such screeds in any language). Certainly it means that some temporal &^#$ PAYMENT makes for a null and void 'contract' with #1 Celestial Accountant. Whatever this also means: assuredly it means that the family which accepts this quid pro quo seemingly dooms selves, including the brainwashed disposable youg'un to:

No virgins, no houses with many servants, no credit.. zippo. Just the Universal equivalent of.. the damnation of hearing interminable theological speech in one's dead mind for 123 \ufffdons - before the real torture begins; the usual rending, burning, terror but No Rapturing Out to that Great Throne with the Lecturer lecturing lectures on and on and on ... .. .

{sigh} x ex
Just more homo-sap terminal nuttiness with Holy Books and double-entry Accounts Receivables, I guess. How similar is The Dismal Science (ugh.. Econ) to the Dismal self-fulfilling Prophecy?

New All depends on how you look at it...
Lemme see now...
1) the youngster selflessly becomes a terrorist^W martyr... nothing mercenary here..
2) the religous hierarchy donates $25K(Great Satan denominations)to the family in recognition for and to continue the practice of raising such jackasses^W sterling youngsters...
3) the terrorist^W hero gets his family into the great hereafter on credit for wasting some hapless civilians^W^W^W^W his martyrdom.

it all works out in the end!

Man is a rationalizing animal, not a rational one...

Too bad.

New question is the suicide rate among PAL youth?
Higher per capita than the suicide rate of Native Alaskan Youth? Having buried several nephews and presided at the hospital beds of others, the current trend of secular Al Aska brigade suicide bombings reminds me of the Alaska suicides. Nothing to live for, being bombarded by television advertising goods you may never achieve in your lifetime leads to hopelessness. The 25k and some satisfaction at striking out at people who can afford such things may play a part in this. If so, there needs to be a recognition of Palestinian traditional, pre arafat culture that can help overcome this trend.

New Well, I think the theory is...
the same as life insurance. By providing a martyr, the family is foregoing an income stream. The cash payment is partial compensation for the money the martyr would otherwise have earned (and handed over to the family) in his lifetime.

His own ego involvement is not neccessarily compromised - he isn't doing it for the money, the money simply releases him from an obligation that would require him to stay alive.

But the point is moot: Islam, like most major faiths, does not condone suicide. Nor the massacre of non-combatants. It is only by the weirdest twisting of the concept of "combatant" and the idea of couragous fighting without respect for death that there is any question of the suicide bomber's eternal torment. The money damns the family. And reduces the man to a mere economic unit, just like slavery does. A family that participates in this does not raise sons, it farms long pig.

I am not a man, I am a free number.
New What I don't understand...
is why Israel doesn't target the families of suicide bombers.

We know that payments assist people to make the decision. Well isn't it reasonable to make it a crime to receive money for suicide bombing, and thereby discourage it?

Cheers,
Ben

New Try targeting sand on the beach...
You will get some real ones and some wanabees and some innocents.
To do it effectively, you're talking genocide.
The Israelies may have issues with that... but then, they may not have a whole lot of other options.
I don't have any easy answers either.

Regards,
Hugh
New I don't see the issue
The idea is to make it illegal to accept money from suicide bombing. Whenever there is a successful suicide bombing, make the parents cough up money you know they are getting, or else put them in jail for a few years. No wannabes. There are enough successful suicide bombers whose family you can go after.

Many countries have laws that deny people the proceeds of criminal activities, even if you are not the one who did the foul deeds. (Mostly directed against money laundering.) Why shouldn't there be a law against receiving money for murder committed by someone else?

Cheers,
Ben

New There has been questions raised about deportation of the
families, but Egypt and Jordan say no thanks,
Bill
TAM ARIS QUAM ARMIPOTENS
New Very simple
Most of the suicide bombers live in Area A, until now under PA civil and security control. Israel is not in control there and the PA has not only not discouraged the phenomenon, but has blessed it. Israel has repeatedly given the PA information about various terrorists planning suicide attacks and the PA has done nothing about it. In fact, the terrorist who committed the PAssover eve bombing was freed by the PA days before to go commit the bombing. This is precisely the reason why Israel has now gone and entered into Area A, to catch the terrorists, their weapons etc.

New But they do target the family.
The Israeli bulldozers level their home. The family of the Passover suicide bomber is waiting. [link|http://www.nytimes.com/2002/04/01/international/middleeast/01ARAB.html|NY Times article.]
"We will stay here in the house, and they can come if they want," said his father, a prosperous vegetable wholesaler.
I don't know that the homes are always leveled, but I recall reading of instances in the past.
