Suggestions on home theater receivers?
Trying to put together a modest home theater; mainly we need DVD and gaming. I've got a 46" Samsung for the wall, and I need something that does upconversion so I can use a single HDMI cable behind the drywall.

sorry, haven't kept up
my HDTV is so old it predates HDMI by a couple years. I was only an early adopter because my old TV died and I couldn't see replacing it with an NTSC set.

Re: Suggestions on home theater receivers?
was looking at this the other day to replace my current...as I don't have HDMI throughput on my receiver currently...
http://www.us.onkyo....lass=Receiver&p=i reasonable price..only 5.1...but I don't have the room to go to 7.1 anyway. Sure, understanding today's complex world of the future is a little like having bees live in your head. But...there they are.

I've been looking at the Onkyos
The 500 series doesn't have upconversion, though.
Thanks. Regards,

Are you sure your TV doesn't do the upconversion you want?
Some/most do to some extent.
http://www.highdeffo...t-dvd-signal.html It apparently depends on which is better at doing the upconversion. Cheers, Scott. |

It's a cable issue.
The TV is going to be hung on the wall and I don't want to have to include every input cable known to man in the run from the rack to the TV mount. :-)

Understood.
I haven't looked into this in detail recently. AFAIK, most recent video receivers take RCA/HDMI/S-Video/etc. inputs and can output any of them to a single HDMI cable. (Be careful about the audio to the TV - there can be some issues there, I think.) I think there are different kinds of upconversion - e.g. 480 DVDs to 720p or 1080i. What your TV will display will be its native resolution - the main question is the sophistication of the interpolation and whether it makes sense for the receiver or the DVD player or the TV to do it. Presumably whatever is newer will have better interpolation routines.

Mine is TX-SR804
http://www.onkyousa....ceiver&m=TX-SR804
http://www.soundandv...sr804-av-receiver Amazon link for easy to read specs, but none available: http://www.amazon.co...ver/dp/B000J40PMK It cost me about $220 2 years ago. I love the brand and the quality, but don't know what the current models give you as far as price performance. |

I've been looking at Denon stuff off-and-on.
In the AVR series, the last 2 digits of their model numbers indicate the year. It looks like they list at $400 and go up rapidly from there.
http://www.crutchfie...eatures_and_specs Lots of things to consider, unfortunately. It's probably pointless to try to futureproof the purchase - things are still changing pretty rapidly. I'd suggest listing your immediate needs, picking a budget, and not agonizing too much. I wish I could do that. ;-) Some places seem to have that for around $325, but it might be like cameras - if it's too cheap, then you don't get a US warranty or something. Dunno. HTH. Good luck. Cheers, Scott. |

Really pleased with my Denon.
I have a pre-HDMI Denon AVR-2802 7.1 receiver (making it a 2002, I suppose - that sounds about right).
I know this doesn't solve Scott's problem, but I run HDMI from DirecTV box, Apple TV, and Magnavox blu-ray to a Sony 52" LCD HDTV, and one digital audio out to the Denon. Works a treat. Have been very happy with this setup. |
