New Might and Magic
It was almost a stealth release, so I thought I would mention here that Might and Magix 9 was released friday.

So far it looks pretty good, but I've just managed to clean out the first little dungeon.

The only real problem I've seen so far is that the first bit of adventure you have to go on, The Isle of Ashes, is almost too hard. Your characters are not really given a chance to equip properly and start with a shortage of skills, gear and spells.

Because of this it takes only the least bit of bad luck and your characters will be wiped out. But once you get past that, things pick up. Sturmford was a traditional M&M town with a nice little dungeon underneath it to do some basic character building.

New Oh god another time sink
I haven't finished Wizardry 8 yet (and probably never will, now.)

New Know what you meant about time-sinks...
Or more to the point, I just don't spend enough time playing games...

It took me about five very lazy years to finish Diablo (and not the expansion pack). So I'm not scheduled to finish Diablo II 'til about 2008 :)

I'm still working on The Settlers II, even though I believe IV has been out for a while now.

Also in the wings waiting to be completed are Black & White, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Q3A, Discworld Noir, and probably a few others besides.

Then on the Dreamcast there's Sonic Adventure II, Metropolis Street Racer, Speed Devils, Phantasy Star Online (offline)...

Don't think I'll be buying any games for a while. Come to think of it, I never did get to the end of Bard's Tale on my C64!
John needs way more spare time on his hands.
New Finished Bard's Tale once...
...a LOOOOOOONG time ago.

Played the other two, and got bored before finishing them.

Right now, I'm waiting on Neverwinter Nights, which may possibly be the last game I buy for a long time. And no, that doesn't mean I'll be downloading free games or ISOs...

New Wizardy and Bard's Tale
I played Wizardy on the Apple //c a friend owned, then he got Bard's Tale and I moved my Wizardy characters over to it. Some it wouldn't let me move, like my level 4096 Ninja I got by cheating and switching disks when it checked for experience. Wizardy 1, 2 and 3 were easy to fool. Problem is that the level 4096 Ninja took about 3 to 5 minutes to calculate the damage it took, and then displayed it in scientific notation (1.2E+33 damage on the Kobalt). That 1Mhz 6502C chip could only run so fast.

I later got Bard's Tale for the Amiga 1000 I had. It was fun for a while.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New Might and Magic difficulty...
...is something that is a bit of a tradition in the series IMO.

Every single M&M has been moderately difficult to figure out at the beginning, and then improves from there out. You get your ass handed to you until you figure out the one thing that you REALLY need and then you power up, and start dishing out damage.

Would be interested to try it sometime...

Nah. Too much going on right now. :P

New True but
Most of the Might and Magic games where hard to start but M & M 9 sets some new standards.

The first quest is an unavoidable 'get off the island after a shipwreck' quest. The problem is that there is no way to build your characters before doing this quest, it is almost litterally the first thing that happens after you leave the starting town.

Between creating the characters and doing the first quest there is exactly one store, selling items which are either too expensive or useless because you don't have the skills to use it. What little gear you start with depends on the 4 starting skills you pick, and is largely worthless.

The end result that is you may end up doing the first quest with some characters that have no weapons or armor at all.

However, having been forced to start over due to a game bug I can say this. Don't worry about the other stuff, assign all of your characters bow as a starting skill, including the mages. This makes the first island resonable, otherwise your liable to have to do a save / move / fight / save loop to get through.

New I actually finished M&M 6
Or was that M&M 7? But it took a long time. Nowdays, games like EverCrack or (more recently) Dark Age of Camelot are beginning to crowd out these classic single-player RPG's.

I hear that Heroes of Might and Magic 4 is either out or coming out Real Soon Now, also. (sigh) Love both series but dammit, where is the time to actually play them?

New That's where Neverwinter Nights comes in...
...all that classic "single player" goodness crossed with the "massive" (up to 32 or 64, probably 64 at this point, players on a single server) for the end user.
