Amazon erases certain books on Kindle due to content
By: Laura Khalil •December 15, 2010

Amazon is playing judge and jury with certain books in the Kindle store, most recently removing an "incest-themed erotica" novel from its store, Ars Technica reports.

While that type of book definitely has a niche market, this is an unusual move from Amazon which recently defended the sale of Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure saying:

“Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable. Amazon does not support or promote hatred or criminal acts, however, we do support the right of every individual to make their own purchasing decisions.”

Amazon did an about face with the Pedophile’s Guide, removing the book without comment. Now it’s going after self-published author Selena Kitt, which wrote a novel that addresses the theme of “incest-themed erotica”, as well as several other authors that write on the same topic.

Anyone ever hear their rationale for 1984?
And ... removing: REMOTELY!?
Instant censorship-by-caprice ... and this 'beats' Real Books, er. How?

Yeah, back in June or July when this happened, I wrote to them and here is part of their reply (regarding '1984'):

"...apologize for all the inconvenience this situation have caused to you.

Please understand that these books were added to our catalog using our self-service platform by a third-party who did not have the rights to the books. When we were notified of this by the rights holder, we removed the illegal copies from our systems and from customers' devices, and refunded customers. We are changing our systems so that in the future, books will not be removed from customers' devices in these circumstances.

And, I've passed your comments to the Kindle Business Team.

We do value the feedback of our customers and make every attempt to integrate their comments or suggestions into our stores and procedures. Customer feedback like yours helps us continue to improve the service we provide, and we're glad you took time to write to us."

They value your feedback.

I understand the problem they had, but the books affected, WOW!

I think it's perfectly clear we're in the wrong band.

Not that I'm asked much. But still...

Q:Is it proper to eat cheeseburgers with your fingers?
A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.

It doesn’t get tagged as pathological, even if using it means you ignore actual people.
