New just use an axe, not a maul
trick is aiming point, I aim for the dirt just beneath the log and usually reach it. The other trick is to slice the log from the outside in as opposed to splitting it in half then quarters. Take slices until whats left is squared off then split that diagonally

New 30 degree angle on the edge.
At least that is what I was taught.

Effectively the same edge as for a regular cold chisel. Just very sharp, enough to graze the skin but not enough to easily cut it.
