New Sorry for the recent service interruptions.....
So it looks like my UPS needs new batteries. Gonna have to figure out where to get those. But basically, for the past week, anytime something gets printed, when the printer warms up, it draws so much power that the UPS goes offline momentarily. Thus knocking out both my network and this server. The situation has been temporarily been rectified by moving around a whole mess of plugs. Once I get new batteries for the UPS, I'll have to do some work to it, which will require more down-time, and then hopefully things will be back to normal.

New Compare prices for new vs. batteries and shipping . . .
. . in some cases there isn't a lot of difference - the UPS makers get a better deal on batteries than you do, and batteries are heavy to ship.

New Re: Sorry for the recent service interruptions.....
I've purchased batteries for my personal UPS' from Batteries Plus. The nearest store to you is on Ogden Ave: http://www.batteries..._details/281.aspx

You can also try Radio Shack. When I needed a battery for the household alarm system they were the only people to have them in stores.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

New On printers and UPSes...
It's my understanding that laser printers generally shouldn't be on a UPS for the reasons you cite - namely they have power spikes where they draw a lot of current. If you don't absolutely need to have it there, you might want to consider just having it on the "surge" outlets.

My recollection of this rule of thumb is probably from the LaserJet II days, so it might be obsolete, but I don't have our Lexmark E234 on our office UPS for that reason. And it seems to still be a common recommendation - http://articles.tech...8_11-6085460.html

Good luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: On printers and UPSes...
Yeah, that's the thing. It *WASN'T* on the UPS. It was on the surge strip. The UPS was not plugged into the surge strip. The UPS and the surge strip were plugged into the same wall outlet. And still the UPS went down.

New My Brother
would tax the entire circuit it was on. It was problematic enough to make me remove it from service as opposed to locating it on a plug on another breaker.
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
