Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Anyone ever work in Hong Kong?
My sister is heading over there to work as an expat, and I was interested if anyone had any advice or experiences to share.
Regards,
-scott
Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New Two weeks in Taiwan is as close as I get
...and even then, I only really saw the inside of the hotel room, and the inside of the office. I worked for something like 17 days straight with no down-time. So I can tell you that the traffic is a sight to behold, and you're pretty much SOL for food if you don't eat fish (as I don't.) Otherwise, go with an open mind. :)

New No personal information.
She might want to review some of James Fallows columns at the Atlantic's web site. He's got lots of helpful pointers about working from China scattered in various articles and blog posts.

E.g. http://www.theatlant...world-takes/5987/ (which is mainly about Shenzhen - north of Hong Kong).

Sounds like a great opportunity. I hope she has a good time.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Has she read The Four Hour Workweek?
It lists a ton of resources for Americans in foreign countries.

Also, she might check out "I Am a Japanese School Teacher". http://classic.dryan...apanese/index.htm

Actually, you should check it out, too, if you haven't already. Then just LRPD the whole archive.

New ONE THOUSAND YEARS OF PAIN!
Japanese culture shares some similarities, but there are a number of differences as well.

New didnt we have a kiwi on the old board?
He worked in HK for a number of years, lost his email addy.
thanx,
bill
New I think there were a couple.
Unfortunately I can't come up with either name. One was a nice guy; another was an ex-IBMer (IIRC) with lots of experience and lots of strongly held opinions that you're probably thinking of. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;-) I think he left shortly after Rick Moen and a few others. :-/

He's to absent friends...

Cheers,
Scott.

New Doug something...

New doug marker
dmarker@internetage.com think thats the same one.
New Yes, Doug Marker
as Box says. Probably the (ex-) Resident HK expert.

I shipped him lots of wifi gear etc. from bargain sellers who wouldn't deal ex-US in those days.
Some of his expressed sentiments sent CRC into hi epicyclic kraut-gene phase at one point and Doug ceased composing his oft-historical essays from his huge experience;
CRC's rhetoric isn't 256-bit, like any ad-hominem: the tirade can be turned on itself, if you care to engage.
(You can prove anything via enough hyperbole. Like say, "you're too Old to comprehend my bright-young-vitriolic Mind" cha cha cha) Doug didn't care to engage on that level. Our loss, IMO.

Miss Curmudgeon-1 though, especially on those topics which beggar the intellect -- like say, anything with a teabag attached.

Can fire up the toy-machine and look for another addy if Box's proves vacated. Doug's HK lore is extensive == he lived there n years.
Haven't heard from him in a few ... has grandchildren and other hobbies.
(One of his collaborations is/was? the Cartercopter.)
http://www.cartercopters.com/

I hoped that sucker would land at Santa Rosa Airport someday ... still waiting.

A.

PS: ever pick a mattress? :-0

PPS; [Ed] Anyone unaware of Cartercopter should enjoy their pithy 2010 summary, linked.
These folks went from sketch-pad to takeoff/landing with unusual perspicuity -- with near-exponential learning curve. Dunno extent of Doug's eventual involvement, but he was there from early-on.
Maybe it's time for me to check-in with Doug, too.

New Re: Yes, Doug Marker
We did buy a mattress... Sleep EZ, from Arizona. Said mattress was installed Friday evening, and we are still formulating opinions. So far the reaction seems positive, although the mattress is a bit wobbly (being tall). We can't decide if it's too soft or too hard. :-P

Rooms were made for carpets, towers made for spires. Ships were made for cannonade to fire off from inside them.
