Tea Party types are more likely to be racist
http://www.newsweek.com/id/236996
Ever since the Tea Party phenomenon gathered steam last spring, it has been plagued by charges of racism. Placards at rallies have depicted President Barack Obama as a witch doctor, denounced his supposed plans for "white slavery," and likened Congress to a slave owner and the taxpayer to a "n----r." Opponents have seized on these examples as proof that Tea Partiers are angry white folks who can't abide having a black president. Supporters, on the other hand, claim that the hateful signs are the work of a small fringe and that they unfairly malign a movement that simply seeks to rein in big government. In the absence of empirical evidence to support either characterization, the debate has essentially deadlocked.
Until now, that is. A new survey by the University of Washington Institute for the Study of Ethnicity, Race & Sexuality offers fresh insight into the racial attitudes of Tea Party sympathizers. "The data suggests that people who are Tea Party supporters have a higher probability"Â25 percent, to be exactÂ"of being racially resentful than those who are not Tea Party supporters," says Christopher Parker, who directed the study. "The Tea Party is not just about politics and size of government. The data suggests it may also be about race."
Not all members are racist, naturally, but any individual is significantly more likely to be "racially resentful" then one pulled at random from the general public.
The article doesn't explain what they mean by "racially resentful" so there is some ambiguity there. But honestly, I prefer a fuzzy line on those things anyway. Racism isn't a binary line, it isn't using one word that makes you a racist. It's a fuzzy spectrum of various degrees of invalid assumptions and misguided inclinations.

question for ya
at an mlk memorial service what percentage of that group would be considered "of being racially resentful" think it would be at least 25%

Boy, they won't quit with that, will they?
Now trying to manufacture "scientific proof" that tea party folks are racists.
And building infiltration teams, et al.
For a "fringe" movement, there sure is a lot of time being spent trying to prove something bad about them.

Don't gotta prove what...
is proved by the member themselves.
There are many examples of Tea Baggers being racially motivated. All ya gotta do is *look*.
I'm exposed to a shit ton of these tea party members on the motorcycle forums I frequent. Its just amazing. They also believe many other things. FDA is making the US sick. (they are but not the way *they* think). They believe Obama is indeed trying to make whites a slave. Some also believe that since Alabama never ratified the cease-fire (or what ever it was called) that the Civil War is still in effect.
Oh just the absurdity.

What is different
from them versus what you could find in any other group of people? Were there not signs, racial or other (nazi, etc) all over the antiwar protests, the G20 stuff is notoriously violent
There seems to be a continued push to generalize the tea party folks as intolerant racial sub-intellectual folks. I actually think this is a very dangerous tactic, given the demographic of this group..which makes the membership much more likely to vote in a mid-term.

Maybe the groups YOU hang with
But no. I don't see these attitudes as something that is generally acceptable, which means if these people are everywhere, then they are hiding it when they are interacting with me.
Of course, due to my last name, I'd expect that.
It is only the way out fringe assholes who demonstrate it in public. Kind of like the TPers.
And to compare it to the G20 stuff? hehe. whatever. enjoy.

Right...
you've seen a picture on a blog or 2 (the ones you frequent) and assume thats all TP activity.
That certainly will be a representative sample.

Ahh, nice viewpoint
The "limited isolated picture" that the outside people see can't possibly be right.
Like I said, whatever, enjoy. Same response I give my 15 year old when there is simply no reason to argue a silly (judged by me of course) viewpoint, and even if I "win", it doesn't really matter. Wasted effort.
TPers aren't FOR much. Other than spending on the space industry. But they sure are AGAINST stuff. They express their displeasure not with alternative ideas, but with a variety of attacks. At least none that seems to make it into the real world, in an organized fashion.
Show me a party platform that more than 50% of them agree with. Until then, I picture them as a South Park crowd. You know, rabble rabble rabble.

Interesting
in that you don't seem to know what they are about, but quick to agree that based on what you see they are >generally< racist.
The entire reason they've gotten legs is because there isn't a party platform they are aligned with. They obviously lean Republican but don't think that the Republican party is being fiscally conservative enough and certainly this administration has only added on to that burden.
Its a size of government issue. But according to Keith and Garofalo they can't have legitimate beliefs because they are all half wit racists. Not making up her view, she was pretty direct and that media presenting it is pretty main stream.
There isn't alot of challenging the core gov't size argument..but there is a huge amount of race card being thrown about. Its a dangerous tactic being used. And a TP'er who happens to not be a racist would probably be pretty indignant about being told by MSNBC and others that the only reason they could possibly think differently is because the President is black and they are stupid.

Or you could just read this
Rage on the Right
[ ... ]
The anger seething across the American political landscape  over racial changes in the population, soaring public debt and the terrible economy, the bailouts of bankers and other elites, and an array of initiatives by the relatively liberal Obama Administration that are seen as "socialist" or even "fascist"  goes beyond the radical right. The "tea parties" and similar groups that have sprung up in recent months cannot fairly be considered extremist groups, but they are shot through with rich veins of radical ideas, conspiracy theories and racism.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

Re: Right...
The flying of a large Confederate flag at a gun rights rally at Back Cove startled onlookers Sunday, even causing an African-American teenager to refuse to leave his vehicle out of fear, witnesses said.
Those on the "open carry" side said they were simply celebrating their Second Amendment rights and didn't intend to frighten anyone by displaying firearms  a sign of the gulf dividing the two sides in Sunday's opposing protests.
Shane Belanger, a University of Southern Maine student who organized the display of guns in the open carry rally, told news outlets that the aim of the gathering wasn't to frighten anyone but to show that people have a constitutional right to bear arms.
But this message didn't translate for counter-protesters, especially those who spotted the Confederate flag flying over an anti-Obama sign at one protester's site.

Re: Boy, you're on a roll
Why does a gun rally need a large Confederate flag right about an anti-Obama billboard?
When will you quit ignoring the obvious?

What does this have to do
with the tea party movement?
I'm not saying that there are no racists in this country. We could chat all day about which race is more racist against which race...but thats as much a side point as you pointing to a gun rally in this thread.

That liberal bias
A group of people stand around with race-baiting signs and it turns out there is a statistical tendency towards racism in that group.
Once again, reality shows its liberal bias.

Hmmm
While I accept I couldn't possibly have the amount of up front exposure you had, do you REALLY think my viewpoint is limited to your focused list of anti-TP blog posts?
Really?
The amount of reading I do?
Tell you what. Point out a TP event within 50 miles of Philly. I'll visit it. And I'll report back.
How would you suggest I introduce myself? Real name, real reason? Honest approach? Or should I simply lay low and take notes and pictures?
