New need help with OpenOffice's Writer
My daughter owns a Macbook and I downloaded openOffice for her around Thanksgiving time. She did the install and has used it on and off since then without problems.

Last night she was working on a school paper; she closed the Writer app with 5 pages completed. Just an hour ago she opened the document, typed in another 1 1/2 pages, then saved it and closed Writer. She re-opened the app, and the new 1 1/2 pages she just entered aren't there. She swears that she saved it before closing Writer.

Near as I can tell, it was saved as an XML document. I found the backup copy from last night, opened that up and saved it as a Word 97 document. However, she wants me to recover what she just entered and I don't know how to do that.

Does anyone have any ideas? TIA

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

New Re: need help with OpenOffice's Writer
when closing open office there is a save changes dialogue. If she didnt press save she is out of luck. You also might see if there is a file in her trash icon

New Nothing in the Trash can
and when I looked at her menu last night her choices were Save and Save As...

What's even more strange is that she emailed the doc to her mom as an attachment; instead of receiving 5 pages only 3 arrived. She continued the paper as a separate document and emailed that to her mom too. Result? A 3 page paper arrived several times with 1 page or less - why the rest of the paper didn't arrive in the attachment I have no idea.

According to her after she got home from work last night, discussions with coworkers and friends who are Mac users had a general dislike of OpenOffice. So, does anyone have any comparisons and contrasts between Apples iWork and MS' Office 2007 Home and Student Edition? She wants to dump OpenOffice and those are the only 2 software packages available immediately at retail.

New I dislike the ms office for mac, rahter use open office
I have never tried I works. They had an older product on my mini and I like that better than MS office as well.

New get iWork.
Can't go wrong.

And the general dislike is from its history as neoOffice.
New Re: Nothing in the Trash can
I use OpenOffice on my OSX box all day long, every day. It's what I use as an MS Office replacement. I can't offer you advice on what's best to replace it, but I can offer at least a data point that there's nothing intrinsically wrong with the OO program such that it randomly loses data. Hell, I even have to use its recovery program once in a while, and that works a champ as well.

New Time Machine enabled?
If it is, you might be able to recover it that way.....
