New How can I tell if my BIOS supports FireWire?
I've got a FireWire add-in card, but it just will not recognize the camera attached to it. I've done all the modprobing to load raw1394, dv1394, ieee1394, checked that the /dev existed and was writable, checked permissions. But no matter what I do, when I plug in the camera and turn it on, nothing shows up in dmesg or in lspci.

I suspect it's the bios, which is dated 9/20/2004. There's a new one, but it's 2.9M so the normal method of writing it to a floppy (or a loopback) to flash it won't work, and this box doesn't have a CD burner.

Are there any ways to directly check if FireWire is supported?

New Machine? BIOS version? Brand/model of card? Camera?
I'm not sure I understand the problem. Is the card recognized by the system? Or does the driver for the card only get loaded when a FW peripheral is attached to it?

Firewire's pretty old, so I would think a 2004 machine wouldn't have any trouble with a Firewire add-on card. I doubt it's the BIOS, myself, but I've not experienced this problem.

It seems that some newer PCs don't supply the 5V that some Firewire cards require.

Sometimes trying a different slot seems to help (if that's an option) - http://www.techsuppo...tect-install.html

HTH a little. Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Camera driver?
I have an add in firewire card on an older machine than that...works fine.

My vid camera has a driver that needs to be loaded for it to work. Most older DV cameras will likely have a driver that will need to be loaded. (mine is a panasonic)
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
New Nope, doesn't need one, doesn't have one

New Specs
Camera: JVC GR-DA30U
PC: HP Compaq dc7100 USDT
BIOS: 786C1 v01.59
MOBO: 0980h
FireWire add-in card: Agere Systems FW322/323 (rev 61)

I'll try moving the card, there's another slot available.

New Kino, Cinellera, dvgrab
None of them even find a device.

New Looks like the FW card can work with 5V and 3.3V
At least the chip supports it. http://www.lsi.com/n...ducts/fw_322_323/

The HP page doesn't give much info on the PCI slots - http://h18000.www1.h...%20Specifications

The peripherals are PCI 2.2 and PCI 2.3 compliant. PCI 2.2 requires 3.3V rails. http://en.wikipedia..../Conventional_PCI Presumably there are no 5V rails in the PCI connectors, but the card should work (unless something else on it requires 5V and that seems unlikely).

Unfortunately, since it's an HP/Compaq, it can be hard to find troubleshooting information.

I haven't been able to find much of anything else useful, except for scattered reports of others having trouble with the same card.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Maybe I shouldn't have gone so cheap on the card
I thought Firewire was a pretty well debugged technology, so we were at the point of commodity hardware. Maybe not.

New OS?
What OS are you running?

Might require a non-free module if it Ubuntu.

try Mint.

Firewire isn't a done deal.

It sucks.

New Good news
Last time I looked for firewire cards for the laptop (PCMCIA or Express card) they were around $90. For something that might or might not work, that's a big maybe.

I don't know what's changed in the last couple of months, but now they're listed on eBay for $4. Definitely time to get the laptop screen repaired and try a firewire card in it. If that works it will be even better, since I'll be able to record video right in the kitchen.
