A long, long time ago I spent some time in Paris with my parents.
A memory: playing pinball in the place next to the hotel. And the tastiest thing I remember: the pinball place served a hot dog grilled on French bread with Swiss cheese on top.
Tried it tonight. I don't really like hot dogs anymore, but I was feeling pretty nostalgic. Having the life you were planning and building and living for most of your existence end will do that sometimes.
So:
* 1 Oscar Meyer Turkey Frank. (This had me worried. The sausage remembered as a hot dog by a <10 year old in Paris is probably not closely related to the sausage sold as a hot dog in the USA 40 years later.)
* 15cm of baguette ie. French bread.
* Shred of Milwaukee Baby Swiss
Cut the baguette in half lengthwise, because it is thicker than I remember.
Slice through the soft part, leaving the crust intact.
Tuck the hot dog in the slice.
Sprinkle with cheese.
Set the oven on broil. Broil until the cheese browns and the baguette is toasted. 15 minutes in my toaster oven, which is actually closer to the machine I saw in France than my real oven is.
The result is both pleasing per se and satisfying to my memory (that's as close as I'll claim to "authentic" without research). I'll do it again. I kind of have to, I have hot dogs and baguette that will otherwise go bad. But I'd do it anyway.
