Tearing my hair out in frustration
Recently my daughter bought a Macbook and my wife bought a "N Ultra Range Plus" wireless router by Linksys by Cisco so she could get to the Internet wirelessly. Friday night she and I were on the phone with Linksys getting it set up and working.
Yesterday afternoon she turned on her Mac and tried going to Facebook - no connection. Funny, though, she was able to connect using a neighbor's unsecured wireless connection.
This morning she and I spent almost 1 1/2 hours on the phone with a script reader in India for Linksys trying to get her Macbook to work using our router's network. No matter what we tried we were unsuccessful. (She could, however, get to the Internet when connected to the router with an Ethernet cable.) Finally the script reader transferred us to an unknown company that wanted $69.95 to "help us with our problem". Mind you we have 90 days free support with Linksys from date of purchase which was the beginning of October. So obviously that pissed me off because the script reader was claiming that my daughter's computer has the problem.
Right now she's on Facebook using another neighbor's unsecured wireless network, so it's not the computer's problem.
Can anyone throw some ideas my way on what I can do to get her Mac using our wireless router?
TIA.
"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

any other WiFi hardware to test your router with?
It doesn't have to be a computer - both the Nintendo DS and Playstation Portable have WiFi support.

Don't have anything else - you could visit and lend your expertise ...

it will be greatly appreciated
right now my daughter is enjoying someone else's unprotected connection, and I prefer that she use what I'm paying for correctly.

HURRAH FOR SPICEWARE!!!
He came over yesterday and adjusted some settings, both on the router and on my daughter's Macbook, and VOILA! It worked! Now I have a happy daughter, and should get a happy son because his Playstation 3 is supposed to have wireless capability so now he can play games over the Internet on it.
Plus, Spiceware got to meet "little poop eater" who was on his best behavior all afternoon (the dog, not Spiceware). Last night he returned to his usual form of pain-in-the-ass.

The linksys "easy setup" software was crap
fought with it for a bit then used the web interface.
Basically turned off encryptionto see if it would connect that way, which it did. Then set up the SSID to Smith, instead of the default Linksys, and turned back on encryption. Worked, but the MacBook was extremely sluggish even though my MacBookPro was speeding right along. Then changed the channel from 11 to 1 and the poor performance cleared up - so I suspect all the neighbors' WiFi routers were defaulted to 11.
Only thing I did on her MacBook was to show her Exposé and turned on Spaces.

Re: The linksys "easy setup" software was crap
Just for drill I tried using that once. I've set up probably more than 60 of those things, and the first thing I do is heave the CD into the nearest circular file.
