New New York takes another hit . . .
. . and this one's below the belt.

David Sax, a Toronto native who lives in Brooklyn, has done worldwide research on Jewish delis and written a new book titled "Save the Deli". In it he states that Los Angeles has "more delicatessens of higher quality than anywhere else in America".

Incidentally, he found the worst Reuben in the world at an Arby's in Kansas.

New boca has better deli's than ny
New What's he doing eating a Reuben at Arby's?
I'm inclined to ignore his entire body of work based on that simple fact.

Best jewish deli I've ever eaten at was in Cleveland (well, suburb).

In shear numbers, the LA thing may be right...but I would bet if you were to take top 5 NY vs top 5 LA...NY would win.
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.

He was researching for a book on deli food, of course. Researchers have to sample the worst as well as the best to get a balanced view.

As for the top 5, he rates two in LA as the best in North America, and a few others as top quality, so I doubt NY would win that way either.

Website goes into a bit more detail and reasoning. I might say I have to agree...and will endeavor to have a Reuben in LA my next trip out :-)

New If you're in Houston make sure to stop at Kenny & Ziggy's
He's got a few mentions of my favorite deli:

Here is a delicatessen of the highest order, where quality is the defining factor above all else. Forget comparisons saying “Great for Texas” or “Great for the South”, this is one of the best in the country and I implore any of you who might be in Houston for any manner of Rodeo, Tycoon convention, or otherwise to pay Mr. Ziggy Gruber a visit. Priceless.

Foodies generally acknowledge that one of the last authentic New York delicatessens in the world is located at 2327 Post Oak Blvd. Ziggy Gruber, owner/chef of Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen, recently spoke with Eating Our Words about how a third-generation deli man wound up living in the Lone Star State and loving it.

Guy Fieri visitied Kenny & Ziggy's not to long ago for an episode of Diners Drive-ins and Dives. I found a small part (about 1/3rd) of the segment on YouTube:

New I ordered a Reuben in SF once...
and the guy at the counter said "What kind of bread do you want?"

WTF? WTF?? "Rye," I said cautiously. This, it turns out, was not an option. "Bye," I said, less cautiously.

The place was out of business well under half a year after it opened.
