New Job hopes climbing
I've been out of "real" work for over a year now. Side jobs, unemployment and raiding my 401k have kept me afloat so far. In this time I have seen a total of 7 jobs listed in my local paper that were remotely in my field of expertise. Two of those were a relatively close match. I've had four interviews in this time. A friend who was laid off from the same job at the same company has only had one interview.

Now for the good news. In the past 10 days I've seen two listings that almost seem to have been written with me in mind. Two extremely close matches after a year with slim pickings in the "almost" and "sort-of" range.

One is with a local company I've been wanting to work for since I first heard of them 6 years ago. They seem interested. Applied online Sunday, got contacted Monday by the search firm rep about whether to proceed, contacted today to set up phone interview with the principals. That's for tomorrow. The search firm rep told me they want to fill this spot before the end of next week.

Haven't been this excited since I was 7 and found out you could get a Mounds bar with almonds in it.

"I'm available to start tomorrow" has been known to clinch more than one potential job...

you're doing way better than me - every recruiter I've talked to in the past several months all tell me how I'm "paying for the sins of past employers"; meaning: places I've worked at in the past didn't use the programming language and/or software packages of choice that more companies are demanding today. Teaching them to myself are meaningless because recruiters and future employers want to see them on your resume.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

-- E.L. Doctorow
