New Living without a pulse
http://www.straitsti...Story_436300.html
MADAM Salina Mohamed So'ot has no pulse. But she is very much alive.

She had a new type of artificial heart implanted, which pumps blood continuously rather then beating like conventional ones or natural hearts do. Unfortunately, the article is just news blurb, it's got no details.

I wonder if that has any side effects and if it feels any different.

New Re: Living without a pulse
Before I switched to industry and communications, I was in the medical racket. My degree was in biomedical engineering and I was working permanent part time at the Cleveland Clinic on the research side designing micro based controllers for their pumps (artificial hearts.) In 82-83 timeframe they had a steady state pump they were testing in cows. The main problem at the time was creating an impeller that simultaneously would not damage blood cells and not create dead spots behind it. Clots would form behind the impeller because of the lower pressure and when they got big enough, would throw an embolism. The positive side was that the steady state was a lot easier on the vascular system. There was some speculation that the steady state might allow build up in the capillaries over a longer period of time.
I left the medical dodge in 83, so they've had plenty of time to work on the problem.
New Catching up to Sci-Fi
Just lost 20 minutes Googling and couldn't find it, but I read about this years ago. They had developed hyperspace travel, but people couldn't handle it while conscious. In order to get ships through, pilots had to have several modifications, including replacing the heart with a continuous-flow impeller system.

New Wow. I remember that... just can't think of the author.

Was it that series?

Of course, I am guessing here. I don't quite remember this clearly. I remember seeing re-runs of this or something like it on the independent channel here in town, which is now a Fox Affiliate.
New Never saw it on TV, name doesn't sound familiar though

New don't remember that in Blake's 7
I had most of the series on VHS. Wish they'd do a Region 1 DVD release, but it's apparently been shelved.

I did find this, though based on the above I suspect it's not legit
