New Nothing like losing a 13.5 kV power line to ruin your day...
The power to our building was knocked out today for about 2 hours. A 13.5 kV power line arced and burned through its insulation, destroying the line. Luckily there is a backup, but of course it is in roughly the same condition as the original, was sitting in the same water-filled power duct as the original, so...

So far, no damage to our equipment has been found, but it's mighty annoying...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Something I think about from time to time
Fortunately, the electric supply around here is very steady; almost no blackouts per year. If there were, here's what crosses my mind:

Kind of expensive, though.
New I like inline natural Gas ones
but the invertor I have can keep me for a couple of weeks with a little hassle.
New We've got a small generator for our space.
It worked fine when we used it a couple of years ago during a planned power outage. Unfortunately, this one was out of the blue. And the generator was stored on an upper floor of the building - one that is served by a freight elevator. A freight elevator that wasn't powered during the power outage... :-/ We could have pumped up the tires and tried to roll it down the stairs, but we didn't have any gas for it, etc., etc. IOW, we didn't think about what would be necessary to use it in an unplanned outage.

It was an educational experience.

Fortunately, the UPS did its job, but it was running on fumes by the time the power was restored.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who also has a small generator at home that was handy after a hurricane remnant blew through a few years ago.)
New Single points of failure and all that.
I went through an exercise in the possibility of totally eliminating that in our hosted environment a few years ago. It got very very expensive very quickly.

Q:Is it proper to eat cheeseburgers with your fingers?
A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.
