Welcome to IWETHEY!

New SIMMS they were, 72 pins.
[link|http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Gateway%2BP-Series&model=P5-133XL+with+SIMMs&x=16&y=20|Crucial.com says they will take 128M of RAM total] I am guessing 4 32M SIMMS? I thought it would take the 64M SIMMS? Guess not?

For about $38USD each, that comes out to $152USD, it would be cheaper to just buy a new motherboard and CPu for that amount and then get a DIMM for a little bit more?

New Now that you know what it takes...
you can search around for parts with a lower price.

In situations like this, I balance my time against the cost of the parts and the configuration. Yes, more modern memory is cheaper. But if you just want more RAM in the machine and the rest of it is OK for your needs, then it takes much less time to just add RAM than to:

- buy a motherboard, CPU, RAM
- back up hard drive (or critical information at minimum)
- remove old motherboard
- install CPU, RAM in new motherboard
- install new motherboard
- fight with getting old cables to reach new connectors on motherboard
- bootup. OK? If not, check 30 pages of CMOS settings.
- hope the OS finds everything OK. If not
--- let OS redetect hardware. OK? If not
------ reinstall OS. OK? If not, buy and install newer version.
------ reinstall applications as required
------ configure OS
- discover that new motherboard didn't change performance much because rest of system is too underpowered for OS. Start looking into new PC.

Only partially kidding about the last one. :-)

TheChipMerchant wants $27.50 for 32 MB EDO SIMMs. Several people are selling 32 MB EDO SIMMs on eBay for $15 to $20 (quantity 1).

Only you can decide what your time is worth. I know what I'd do though.... :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New New system
My father-in-law would rather that I get a new system for him than upgrade the memory in the old one. So that is what I shall do. Thanks for the memory price lookup.

New Re: SIMMS they were, 72 pins.
Norm, I have 4 of 8 MB SIMMs and 2 of 4 MB SIMMs that can be yours, gratis. All these SIMMs have no parity and use Hyundai HY514400 (1 Mbit x 4 bit) 70 ns. chips.

Obviously, by current standards, they are low capacity SIMMs and your motherboard would need a lot of free slots. But, you need to know what SIMM capacities your motherboard can handle. Conceivably, the MoBo cannot use 64 MB SIMMs (i.e. not have address lines and address line drivers for the high order address bits of the SIMM sockets). Check the MoBo specs.

Tell me what, if anything, of the above you would like and tell me which of your email addresses (i.e. at bigfoot, hotmail, or yahoo) I should use to contact you for your home address.

New SIMMS and my email
Just use my IWETHEY handle at bigfoot.com and I should get it. My Yahoo address seems not to be working today (POP3 access rejected?), and my Hotmail one is full of spam.

Thanks for the offer of SIMM chips, you wouldn't happen to have 30 pin 4M SIMMS, would you? I have an old 486SLC system I am trying to fit into a Pizza Box case and the only motherboard small enough is a 486SLC (386SX clone?) and I'd like to run OS/2 or Windows 95 on it or something. With 1M SIMMs I got 4M total on it.

New Re: SIMMS and my email
I have sent you an email.

Sad to say, in a rare cleaning frenzy, I tossed out the PCs that had 30 pin SIMMs some time ago.

New Re: SIMMS and my email
Thanks, I didn't get the email yet. Let me know if it bounced. If it did, try ngking at telocity.com instead.
