New The stores prefer laptops
Stores prefer laptops because they have a higher profit margin. From what I'm told it's substantially better in practice, because not only do they get a better margin on the units, but they cost less to keep in the stores. Smaller size, fewer options and they don't become obsolete quite as fast.

New Also competition is deliberately limited by manufacturers.
I have never sold new notebooks to any of my clients, because I can't offer the latest models. Manufacturers limit distribution of new models to the big chain stores and no-one else can get them, even from a top distributor like Tech Data, until they are replaced by newer models. I imagine they enforce price controls, legal or not, on the chains as well.
