New I'll have to amend an earlier comment of mine.
In light of this, it seems that if the British had been more respectful of the US, and the US had reciprocated by allying with Britain in the war against France, then the Americans would certainly have made a difference after all. It would have been over more quickly.

But of course, The British didn't know this at the time.

New On second thought....
they must have had some clue by 1814. They were then faced with the choice of either making up with the US or trying to destroy the US as a competitor. It seems they opted for destruction reflexively, then had second thoughts. But there wasn't much hope of an alliance at that juncture. So they settled for mere peace.
