New Now that was one series I could not get into.
Well-thought out concept, intriguing and innovative solutions to the problems, long-lived series -- and the execution left me cold. I struggled to finish the original novel, the writing was just somehow not to my taste.

I know it's arguably more fantasy than science-fiction. And religion is an important part of the tableau.
